I’m not sure if this is the forum to ask this question in, but I couldn’t find a more appropriate forum to here goes: I know colleges really like to see a specific interest in each applicant, and mine is psychology (I intend to major in it in college). But I don’t really know how to show that on my application. Does anyone know of any extracurricular activities that admissions would appreciate on a potential psychology major’s application? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks!
You don’t have to have ECs that match your major. Just do what you enjoy.
Agree with Erin’s dad.
But if you are interested in psych and want to find a way to test your interest or learn more about what is going on in the field, there are things you can do depending on what kind of psych you are most interested in. Child psychology/development? Try volunteering in a school or summer camp. Issues associated with aging? Try a nursing home. Working with people who have disabilities? Lots of organizations serve disabled vets, the homeless (who often have mental health issues), those recovering from substance addictions, etc…Find an organization that offers psychological services (peer counseling?) and see if you can help. Join NAMI and learn about the issues facing those with mental illnesses or emotional disabilities. And lastly, when you apply to colleges, look at the faculty of the psych departments to see what their research interests are and how well their interests match your own. It never hurts to say, ‘I’m very interested in the work that Prof. X is doing on Y, and hope to take his/her classes and work on research in that area.’
Super helpful. Thanks so much!
