Psychology + Philosophy Double Major?

I want to know your opinions on Psychology and philosophy double major combo, do you guys think its unneccessary? I am interested in doing psychological research/becoming a psychologist/or even being a professor.I am also HIGHLY interested in Philosophy, I actually love philosophy more than psych, but I heard that philosophy majors are only effective if you double major it with something else.

I want to know if philosophy and psychology major is worth it? Will it make me stand out? Will employers think its useless? Does it make a significant difference if I just do one major rather than doing them both?

And yes, I plan on going to grad school, and yes I know how competitive psychology grad school is. I know psych major is highly looked down upon, but I just want to know if its necessary to combine it with a philosophy major.

Your opinions will be much appreciated.

The study of philosophy will greatly inform your study of psychology, and vice versa.
There are a huge number of philosophical issues in psychology, and a number of issues in philosophy, to which psychology can bring some clarity.

Will it make you stand out for graduate school in psychology? Probably not as much as quantitative skills and research experience. It depends somewhat on your research interests and whether you specialize in certain areas of psychology. It’s not necessary to combine psychology with a philosophy major, however.

Will employers think it’s useless? Well, they might tend to think psychology is somewhat more useful and having a second major in philosophy probably won’t enhance your prospects with most employers.

If you plan on going to grad school for psych then I would say double majoring with philosophy is probably not worth the trouble. It is my opinion that Psych is more complimentary to Phil rather than the other way around. If you are going to grad school it would probably be better to focus on Psych in order to get more research experience. However if you really do have an interest in philosophy you should think about minoring in it. A minor might also let you focus on areas you might be more interested in as a psychologist, such as philosophy of mind.

This is great advice, thank you guys for telling me this. I am probably going to minor in philosophy and focus mainly on my psych research. ^^
