I am looking to apply to the great school of UVa and was interested in psychology and hopefully psychiatry. First off, is psychiatry an undergraduate major or just for graduate school. Also, I hear that job recruitment is pretty good in that area. Is it true for all majors (including these) or just select fields? Any feedback would be nice. Thanks!

Psychiatry is a medical field that you would study in depth as a psychiatry resident after you graduate from medical school. There are no undergraduate psychiatry majors in the US.

I don't know that much about recruiting, but it seems to be pretty good here.

hi rightous101~
as a psychologist, i think i can address this. altho i can't be completely objective, here are my thoughts: psychiatry is what an MD chooses for his/her residency AFTER becoming a medical doctor. their emphasis is on the entire medical aspect of the human body, not its mental health. unfortunately for their field, the insurance industry has relegated them too often to "medication management" only, which means little to no reimbursement for therapy but just for 15 min. med sessions.
my d. just graduated UVA in psychology and has an awesome research position, which literally chased her in the middle of her 4th year at UVA. UVA has a strong psych dept, both grad and undergrad. great research going on there. please feel free to private message me if you like, as i think i'm a good match to your questions. good luck!
