Psychology

Anybody know of any schools who have psych as a great program? it's hard to find a school where more than, say, 15% of students have it as a major. 1980 SAT, 3.7 GPA if that helps.

Career-wise, are you interested in psychology research or counseling people (clinical psychologist)? There is a big difference in selectivity, rigor and focus between those two domains.

Do not mistake a big program for a great program. Psychology is a core subject at a lot of colleges and universities. Find a few institutions that fit you well and then start looking at the quality of the psych programs. Look not so much at size but what proportion of the faculty are full-time tenure track versus non-tenure track or part time (aka adjuncts). Look at what kinds of projects the faculty are involved in and whether undergraduates are participating in faculty research. Look at what the college’s alumni with psych degrees go on to do and where they go to grad school. Check out the facilities they have.

Also, keep in mind that the average college student changes majors something like 3 times. Don’t pick a school that’s all psychology and terrible at everything else. You will regret it.

Just google ‘top undergraduate psychology programs’ and you’ll get three or four different organizations’ rankings. These aren’t scientific - but it will give you some ideas of places to look at - especially if a school shows up on multiple lists.

But lynxinsider is right that everyone offers psych and it’s more important to find a school you like, can afford, and feel comfortable at. People change their majors all the time.
