Is it worth it to join Phi Theta Kappa if you have the grades or is it just another waste of 50 bucks. I plan on transfering to Michgain once I get 30 credits and would appreiciate the input.

Why not? There's no way it can hurt, only help.

50? i was charged 75.

Yes, I believe there are no other alternative for academic honor society at community/junior college level.

PTK is intended to be an academic organization for students who want to be active on campus and in the community. People who talk about just paying a fee, as if it were all there is, lead me to believe that your "chapter" of PTK is very poorly run. Perhaps even nonexistent.

On my campus we are very active. We work with the college's administration to coordinate student programs, vote on projects and campus construction, volunteer for charities together, lobby for student rights and financial services and host campus-wide satellite seminars. We meet regionally and internationally with hundreds of other chapters and have academic competitions. To those who refer to it as nothing but a money-making scam with no integrity: I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, and I would wager neither do you.

Yes, I have received the scholarship offers which others have referred to, but from unknown colleges. UVA, however, which is my #1 choice recently sent me correspondence including the following:

Dear You,

Congratulations on your selection as a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member. Undoubtedly you have had a strong community college experience and are now ready to consider your next educational step. We hope you consider making an application to the University of Virginia as a fall transfer student.

Is joining Phi Theta Kappa worth it? I don't know, are you interested in slapping your name on an enrollment list just to make yourself look good? Are you interested in actually contributing something positive to the organization? Either way, it would seem to be worth it. It would appear that, at least in UVA's case, my membership gives me an absolute advantage over applicants who are NOT members. I know THOSE students haven't received recruitment letters.

Is it worth it to me? On many levels, both personally and academically. Is it worth it for you? That's a decision you have to make, but frankly it doesn't seem to be a very difficult choice. As for the membership fee-- How in the world is that abnormal or suspicious? Joining student organizations typically includes paying a student activities fee. This might make more sense if, you know, your chapter actually did anything.
