Public University vs. Art School for Photography

I am currently a senior in high school and want to have a career in photography in the future. Right now I'm planning on attending Western Kentucky University and majoring in photojournalism. I have a full-tuition scholarship and after all my other scholarships and such, I'll only be paying around $2,000 a year. However, I am more interested in the artistic side of photography rather than the "journalistic" side. I'd love to go to an art school, except it's really late and most deadlines have passed, plus, my parents aren't paying for any of my education and I don't think I can afford it. I was looking at SCAD though.

Any suggestions? Should I just go to Western? Any art schools out there that are still accepting applications? Help!

A full tuition scholarship is impressive! Go to WKU and continue to explore your photography interest. You’ll have an opportunity to also explore other possible areas of interest practically for free! If after a year you are committed to photography, you can always transfer. SCAD is not the strongest for photography. Look into School of Visual Arts, Pratt, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, RIT, to name just a few. You will have a chance to “test out” many subjects and interests now and see how you evolve. Best of luck.

Look at what you want to do with your life. If your true passion is Photography then go for it. SCAD’s program is a good one. If you can, visit the campus to make an informed decision. Talk to SCAD’s professors, students, etc. to get an idea of what their strengths are and see if this is a fit for you. Good luck!
