publication year of textbooks

If a professor does not specify, does it matter what year your textbook is if there are a lot of editions? Or is it just better to buy the newest version anyway?

is there a way we can/do find out/order books before actually getting there?

i bet the internet is much cheaper than their book store

They'll be on the school bookstore's website in a few weeks. Most professors don't expect you to have the book the first week, so you'll have plenty of time to order them. Try abebooks.com.

Usually professors specify editions... but assuming the newest is the safest way to go, though books rarely change much between editions.

books of most courses for this fall semester are already there on the bookstore...heres the link: http://bookstore.web.cmu.edu/home.aspx

They are? w00t

great thread

on the website how do we know what section our course is?

like for english 76-101 i know i have steffen but how would I know that it was section T?

little advice for underclassman -- check out cmu misc market before buying textbooks at the bookstore. you'll save yourself cuple of hundreds.

SISIS you should login to student information online and click schedule, your sections should be posted

so what do the sections mean anyways?

what is the cmu misc. market?

oh i was planning on buying books online but not at the cmu bookstore... :) because i always hear about how the college bookstores are a little pricier

The campus bookstore is, most of the time, a ripoff. They sell you books for inflated prices, and then you can sell them back to the bookstore once you're done for half the price you originally paid. Most often you can get a better price for it than the bookstore offers, both buying and selling.

cmu.misc.market is a bboard where people post offers to sell and buy random things (books, furniture, computer stuff, tickets to events, athletic gear, hamsters, large quantities of condoms, etc.) as well as get into heated discussions about idiotic topics. I don't think you can access it without an Andrew account. If you do have an Andrew account, go to http://www.cmu.edu/computing/documentation/bboard_overview/bboard_overview.html to find out how to access it.

If the book store offers you half price for a used book, that's a good day.

so which sites do you recommend? half.com?

also, should i wait to get there and then buy the books, or buy them before? i mean do you require books in the first few weeks of da classes?

www.campusi.com is a good choice for a low-price-finding site.

It's a wiser idea to not order books before classes start. First of all, if you discover you hate a class and want to drop it, then you won't need the book. You might find out that the book is optional. The professor might make a last-minute change. Wait until the first day of the class, at least. Generally, professors (except mean ones) won't assume everyone has the book until a week or so has passed.
