publications to work at

Hi,
I've always been really into creative writing - and I've also wanted to try journalism. Yet, during my time at high school, I had to quit the newspaper after my freshman year to focus on my tennis team and other activities. I know the Daily Cal is very hard to get into - but are there any other publications at Berkeley where I can start out and get some experience?
Thanks in advance!

I’d like to second this question. I did a bit of work on the school newspaper in HS and loved the people I got to meet along the way.

There are actually small publications/newspaper on-campus. Just ask around and you’ll find some. I think there is a small Asian newspaper called Hardboiled (google em up). Try small organizations to build your resume up for DailyCal ;).

BARE Magazine (Fashion)
CLAM (Arts & Lit)
Caliber Magazine (Features)

Is working for something like Caliber a paid position?

Not sure. You can contact them on calibermag.org or on Facebook.

as an incoming freshman how do I join these groups or any group for that matter? Do I have to start emailing them right now or do I wait until the fall?

You officially apply in the fall, but you can always reach out with questions to the club board.

P.S. The folks at Caliber are very friendly and accessible.
