SUNY Purchase requires that you have to sing a song at the audition. Being that I am not a singer how heavily do they weigh the song in the audition process? Are they looking for more musical theatre types?

Thanks for any help!

I think that acting programs ask the students auditioning for them to sing for a few reasons. One, hearing a student sing gives the adjudicators another way to assess your voice for pitch, resonance and so on, all of which matter greatly on the stage. And two, even straight acting schools stage musicals from time to time, so it won't hurt to have people in the class who can at least carry a tune. As far as Purchase goes, however, no, I do not think they have a reputation for looking for people who plan to pursue careers in musical theater. If they wanted that, they would start a musical theater department! (Note that Purchase does allow kids to bring recorded accompaniment and/or pitch pipes, so if you think that using such would help your singing performance, well, go ahead and bring a CD to sing along to.) Good luck. My D is also auditioning for Purchase, so maybe we will meet you! :)

thanks for the help.. I'll keep that in mind :)

And good luck to your D at the purchase audition and to any other auditions! :)
