Deciding between Purdue and UC Davis and looking through the average GPA for CE majors… well couldn’t find anything for Purdue.
Purdue’s avg engineering dept GPA seems to be around 2.8-2.9 while Davis is around 3.1-3.2. Hearing about a 3.0 cutoff for many jobs and internships I’m a little worried about getting something over a 3.0 if it will be manageable or not (can’t say for sure).
Anyone have any sources or numbers about Purdue’s computer engineering average GPA (for all 4 years)?
@ucbalumnus Got my major at Davis, not too worried about FYE I think I can get my major of choice. It’s after I’m concerned about. Cost is the same (scholarship at Purdue and in-state for Davis).
You should be concerned about competitive admission to your major. After all, you are up against students as qualified when admitted, all fighting for limited spots. If you work hard and are focussed, you probably will get your major, but I wouldn’t choose Purdue unless you’d be alright with an alternate. Davis is a guarantee. Purdue is not.
Where you plan to live after you graduate is also important. Both will have multinational companies recruiting there, but many of the companies, will be regional. If you look at where graduates work, with few exceptions, most stay within one state of the school they graduated from. If you want to come back west, you could certainly do it from Purdue, but it’ll be much easier if you’re at Davis.
Currently, AAE, BME, CHE, and ME are the majors with capacity limitations.
I can’t find anything recent on Purdue’s engineering GPA. However, Purdue is know for it’s rigorous program (which is one reason Purdue’s program has a good rep), that it doesn’t have a history of grade inflation, and that it’s not as “selective” when it comes to allowing students into it’s engineering programs. As you can see above, a student with a sub-par GPA would still be admitted to most majors (Purdue has 16 programs). If they have a sub 3.0 GPA the first two years, it’s likely not going to go up in the next 2 years (junior/senior). A lot of other public universities have a 2.5+ GPA requirement.
What is the college GPA needed to renew the Purdue scholarship?
As noted in #3, smaller employers that recruit more regionally may mean that recruiting activity at any given school is biased toward employers in the region. So it may matter where (regionally) you would like to work after graduation.
UCD does look like a safer choice, due to direct admission to the major and no need to worry about GPA minimums to renew a scholarship (or get into the major if it becomes more competitive this coming year).
We hire lots of Purdue grads (I are one too, Industrial) and for ECE, the average is in the high 2.0’s, as indicated, maybe a 2.85. Getting out of ECE is not too difficult but it is not a cakewalk either. That’s on top of the selective enrollment requirements too.
