Purdue Food Science (potential switch in major)

Hello, I am a high senior looking at Purdue. I have been admitted to their agriculture college in the food science major. I truly like food science and what it has to offer; however, I am not exactly sure what jobs I am able to receive post graduation with the Food Science degree.

I am also very fond of biomedical engineering in general. I acknowledge that Purdue engineering is extremely difficult to get into. I was wondering what it takes to switch majors from food science to biomedical engineering? Would I be able to do that before the first day in the fall?

If anyone has any knowledge about switching majors between two of the different schools at Purdue, I would greatly appreciate your input.

Thank you!

My understanding is that you are not able to change colleges at this point in time and you would need to do a CODO (change of degree objectives) after first or second semester.

But, BME is one of the most difficult engineering majors to gain entry, even for students who are starting in first year engineering. This past year they didn’t accept anyone from outside of the college of engineering:

Biomedical Engineering (BME)

At this time, Biomedical Engineering is not accepting CODO students from other Colleges/Schools at Purdue. Any student interested in BME must come from the First-Year Engineering program.

For more information, see the Biomedical Engineering FAQ website.

Okay, that makes sense as it’s a very competitive major. Would it be possible to minor in biomedical engineering, or would that be just as competitive?

Also, if biomedical engineering is out of the question – changing from food science to possibly data science would not be as hard, correct?

CS and Data science are also very difficult to transfer in.

I’m unsure if it’s possible to minor in BME but it’s not on the list of university minors.

Sounds like you need to reach out directly to the university or explore other schools where you have been accepted where it’s easier to change between majors.

You’d have to see the career outcomes but the department shows 100% placement. The outcome report was down before.

You seem unsure on your major. But if you truly know you want to be in biomedical engineering, then you can pursue that elsewhere. There’s still time to apply to many programs.

Okay, thank you for your help!!

Yes, I am quite unsure about my major but I will look at more Purdue resources and try to decide through that. Thank you!!

Your food science major is in the College of Ag. So is Biological Engineering. Look at that instead of biomed. Food science is a good major. Lots of companies recruit for it at Purdue.

Great, thank you! That is what I am planning on doing.
