Hi CC:
My daughter was accepted to 6 year pharmacy program at Purdue. She is so very excited about that. We visited Purdue yesterday, like the campus, like the program and the whole environment. But unfortunately she did not receive any merit scholarship from Purdue (OOS). She was also accepted to UIC ( instate), Knox, UI, Butler.

Do you think it worth going to Purdue for 6 year pharmacy?

I really appreciate your feedback, since I am reading CC daily!

Can your family afford the costs of six years at Purdue? Run the numbers. Remember to factor in a tuition and fees increase of approximately 5% to 7% each year.

If your family can afford Purdue, how committed is your daughter to this career choice? What is her back-up plan if she decides to change majors? Will you continue to shell out for Purdue so she can study whatever it is she decides to study, or will she plan now to transfer home to a cheaper institution?

If she wants to work in Indiana, than Purdue or if she wants to work in IL, than UIC. It is important to make relationships with local supervisors to get a RPh job. Getting a job out of state of your pharmacy school can be a little tricky.

At UIC, most students in the pharmacy program already have a bachelors, though.

Most pre-pharms do not make it into pharmacy school. Many will change majors or not do well in essential courses.

I am a UIC COP alum. Both Purdue and UIC have good pharmacy programs.

Purdue does not have a 6 year program. And even favoring their undergrads it’s still tough to get in when 1000 applicants apply for 165 spots. Knox would be a transfer into pharmacy somewhere, so that might not be a good idea if she’s really settled on pharmacy. Did she get accepted into Butler’s Pharmacy school? Since that’s a 0-6 school that would be a good option because she’d be in from the start (as long as she maintained her grades)
