Purdue, UMich, and UIUC Engineering chances

THIS IS A REPOST WITH UPDATED TEST SCORES

Finished with Junior year, heading into senior.

GPA: W:4.52 UW:3.95

ACT: 32 (35 30 35 26) Superscore: 34 (35 30 35 34)
Courseload: All AP/Honors classes. Taking an additional math class over the summer to get ahead. My high school is known as one of the most rigorous in the nation.

EC’s: Auto Mechanics Club(President, Founder). Was on Model UN, and debate. 150+ service hours. Member of the Astronautics club. Current app developer(trying to make a new grading system for my high school). I had an internship for a political candidate. Golf caddie for a job. Possibly joining the computer science club next year.

Specifics for how I am applying.

UIUC: In state applicant. Both of my sisters attended UIUC (not engineering) so maybe this is some type of legacy. Applying directly into the college of engineering.

UMich: Out of state applicant with no legacy. Applying to the computer science program that is part of their college of liberal arts(LSA), not applying CoE, as this would significantly boost my chances of getting in.

Purdue: Out of state applicant with no legacy. Applying directly to the college of engineering.

Sorry for any typos, and thank you for your input!

For Purdue, do you want to apply to the CS major, or the first year pre-engineering program?

Whichever is easier and can get me better set up.

If you want to be “better set up” to major in CS, apply to the CS major and hope for direct admission to the CS major. If you enroll at Purdue not in the CS major, you need to meet various college course and grade requirements listed here: https://www.cs.purdue.edu/undergraduate/codo-requirements.html .

What what are my chances of admission?

I’d say Michigan is a reach, Purdue is a match, IUIC is a safety (especially because of instate). Michigan will only accept your 32 single-sitting ACT, and your ECs seem surface at best for the most part. All seem to be connected to school, with the exception of the political campaign. However, the app development is very good, but is really the only EC I could say boosts your stock. For that reason, Michigan would be a reach, but Purdue a match due to their much higher acceptance rate. GL!

Thank you for the advice. I believe Purdue superscores, so I would have a 34 by their scale. How would you recommend that I go being surface EC’s? I also did a program at AU my freshman year.

I misspoke; your service hours, Model UN and debate are all good ECs as well. However, many students put these down on their application, which could cause you to not stand out as much as you would hope. For the schools you are considering, however, I wouldn’t really worry about standing out - just make sure all of your ECs can be connected through a certain narrative so colleges can understand why you chose certain ECs outside your FOIS. GL!

I feel as though my EC’s resemble a narrative for liberal arts, which I used to want to go into, but now my interests have changed. Would this be good for applying to UMich Liberals Arts, and just taking their CS major?

I would think so. Liberal Arts really encompasses a bunch of fields and interests, so you should be fine with that.
