Purdue employees don’t get free tuition, just 50% off. No idea about IUPUI. We will look at Rose Hullman , IU, IUPUI,and everything else that is in state. And apply to some out of state.
My son is in lala land, he is sure he will get into Purdue CS, and has no worries, I’m the only one freaking out here :))
We live in Tippecanoe county, so perhaps no breaks with tuition at U of Cincinnati. But a good idea to look into that too. We will likely not get any financial aid anywhere due to dual income professional family, but that’s ok, we can swing it, with big effort and tightening the belt. But of course we would very much prefer in state.
“Op a 1440 sat is not ok. It’s fantastic. Superlative in the big picture. A 1440 means only 70000 students out of the 2.1mm test takers in the entire world scored the same or higher than your son in 2018.”
It’s a 1430 and from a quick google search the average SAT for CS was 1460, hence the concern from parent. It doesn’t mean he won’t get in, but taking it again is something the kid has to be comfortable with.
Yes, that’s why, he seems to be a bit below average on both the SAT and the grades, so I believe it’s a reach. He will definitely apply before the EA deadline. If he doesn’t get into CS, he will go to wherever he can get in. I will make him apply to a ton of schools. We will go visit some this summer too.
I can see why a Purdue faculty parent would be nervous, but yes, the pressure kids are under for admission may be why your son is taking a laid back approach and not interested in retesting. I thought Purdue accepts transfer students? GaTech will take transfer students into Computer science today. Need great grades and specific classes to get into GaTech CS. Will cost you more than Purdue. Similar CS programs at Purdue and GaTech. Ditto on U Mass, look there. Maybe your kid secretly wants to get away from his parents at Purdue? . If he has to transfer, after a year of lack of challenge at another college, let him, but let him try whatever school he gets into, and take the pressure off if you can.
As much as possible, let your son be in the driver’s seat. Ohio State is also good for CS. We have heard of kids getting into UIUC that were rejected at Purdue for medium high math scores with a perfect 800 in Verbal SAT but
a big reject from Purdue for a B in math. Purdue really cares about math grades and scores, so
if has all As in math, I would relax a little. Math seems to be your son’s strength. Also did he or will he take
BC Calculus while in high school? What math matters to Purdue CS. the more math the better.
"I prefer happy and well adjusted to ever disappointed and unhappy.
But thanks for taking the time out of your day to correct a 10 point sat differential. Lol. What a hoot."
We all would, but I don’t know how much platitudes are going to help OP and his/her son. My point was that the son has to be comfortable taking it again including the work needed and if not, then you shouldn’t force him.
I would consider Purdue a match. He does have the advantage of being an instate student. That is not an insignificant factor. It is not a safety and good to have other schools he would like to attend that are affordable. If his goal is CS then go elsewhere if he is not accepted to CS at Purdue. As others have mentioned APPLY EA!
