I am an international student from India. I’ve been accepted into both uiuc and purdue for undergraduate industrial engineering. I’m clear about the fact that industrial engineering is what I wanna major in but I cannot make up my mind between the two schools. From what I’ve read the general opinion on the internet is that uiuc is a slightly better engineering college and is a more fun school but then uiuc’s industrial engineering program is ranked 11th while purdue’s is ranked 4th. I can’t understand why this program alone has been ranked poorly for uiuc. I’m not sure how much I should rely on those rankings for taking a decision. Please share your views and tell me what all should I consider before choosing. Help.
Go for UIUC.
Those rankings are skewed, and are ranked according to the graduate programs of the school, not undergrad.
Okay thank you for your opinion. They have specific undergrad program rankings. So you telling me I should not be looking at the rankings at all ?
It will be greatly appreciated if any alumni or current students of the industrial program in either of the colleges could share their experiences…
I’d definitely go for UIUC over purdue
@halojjhak Okay thank you. Why ?
UIUC. The rankings may show that Purdue is ahead, but there’s enough wiggle room in the methodology that five spaces makes almost no difference. Plus UIUC offer is much more than Purdue. Purdue is mostly an engineering school (sure they have other programs but it’s mainly engineering focussed). UIUC being a more full-fledged research school means more resources, opportunities, etc.
I don’t know how much this helps, but I know two people, both Indians; one went to UIUC and the other to Purdue. The one that went to Purdue is doing an engineering and business major, and he’s having a great time. He even got opportunities to work in Silicon Valley etc. and got offered an internship by a company in association with Stanford or something like that, but its apparently a big deal. Based on what I’ve seen about both colleges in general, I would recommend Purdue, but I’m not sure about the engineering specifics.
