Purdue vs UIUC

I got admitted into both Purdue and UIUC for first year engineering. My intended major is Industrial Engineering.

Which university would be better considering

a)Overall costs
Purdue $35K (first year)
UIUC $45K (first year)

b)Academics Purdue UsNews ranking – 9th
UIUC UsNews ranking – 5th

c)Scholarships for international students (I know they are rare but still)

d)Job Opportunities on or outside campus

e)The strength of the Indian Community on campus

f)Any other factors not on this list

Thanks.

If you are certain on engineering, Purdue @ $35k > UIUC @ $45k.
Job opportunites will be equal, IMO.

I don't know about other factors.

bump........

Even I have got through both these colleges & have the same set of questions

You wouldn't go wrong with either, but Purdue seems to be the better money value.

I'd go with Purdue.

^I kinda agree with world changer.

Have you applied to any other schools? If yes, which ones?

I have applied to Gatech and Umich but am waiting for those......

@20Legend - After how many days did you recieve your acceptance to Gatech after your application status changed from "In progress" to "App Complete"? My app status changed on 22nd March but i am still waiting.

Univ of Il @ Urbana

Ok . So I got accepted to both GaTech and UMich. Can you tell me where I should go (with the same set of questions for UIUC and Purdue)?

Georgia Tech, by far the best choice.

Michigan and Georgia Tech are both roughly equal in terms of Engineering. GT is significantly cheaper than Michigan. However, Michigan is a more well rounded university than GT. So, if you were to switch majors, Michigan would offer more opportunities and in terms of quality of life, Michigan is more fun than GT. So, if you are set on majoring in Engineering and if quality of life is not something that matters to you, I would say go to GT as it is cheaper. However, if you aren't 100% sure that you intend on majoring in Engineering or if you want a well rounded college experience, assuming finances aren't an issue, I would say go for Michigan.

Many students there call GT one of the unhappiest schools in the US. Why risk that when there are many other choices?

^I know quite a few people at GT. The main downside to the place is the crazy workload, which I think uniguy can handle since he's an Indian, and our school courseload is well, downright outrageous.

Figure out where you'd be happiest (and least indebted). All of those will give you good opportunities.

Alexandre - How is Michigan a more "well-rounded" and more fun university than GT?

barrons - How is GT one of the unhappiest schools in the US??

Uniguy, Michigan is more well rounded academically (top 10 departments in all the Social Sciences, Humanities, Business etc...) and socially (primarily because virtually all students at GT major in a very demanding subject, so few people have fun at any point in time).

Like I said, should you feel like switching majors...or go into a career other than Engineering with you graduate, Michigan will offer more options. In terms of Engineering, both are equally good. The edge overall goes to Michigan.

Alexandre - GT at $35K(per year) seems a better bargain than Michigan at $42K as finances are certanly an issue with me. But is it worth spending the extra $7K ($28K for four years) for the edge that Michigan has over GT?

$30,000 more represents 20% of what you would spend at GT. It is a significant sum to be certain, but relatively speaking, it is not that much. Is it worth it? It depends on you. Like I said, if money is very tight, go to GT. Also, if having a well rounded college experience is not a priority for you, GT makes better sense. Finally, if you are 100% certain you wish to major in Engineering and work in the Engineering field when you graduate, GT will serve you just as well as Michigan and will cost you 20% less.

^I say GT would be a better option for Engineering.

20LEGND, you seem very biased toward GT for some reason, but no, GT is not better than Michigan.
