I'm just wondering whether U of C is a great place for people wanting to major in Number Theory and Pure Mathematics. What are some other colleges besides U of C that are the best for people interested mainly in Number Theory? I know that MIT is much more applied in its math than pure, so would MIT be out of the picture?

Princeton, Yale, Uchicago, Umich, uw-madison, rice, stanford all have great pure math.

namish
marite (posts often on the parents thread) did a lot of research into math programs when her son was applying last year - and and lot of the parents have mathies for kids. You might also like to ask your question on parent's forum.

Every top school pretty much is good at math, including the Ivy's.

"Every top school pretty much is good at math, including the Ivy's."

We know that..

The real question is which are REALLY REALLY REALLY good. IE Stanford's good for everything in reality, but if I wanted to major in business I'd much much rather go to Wharton's (U of Penn).

Princeton, Harvard, University of Chicago, Carleton College, Caltech, and Harvey Mudd College have the best pure math programs, in my opinion. MIT has the resources to give you any kind of experience you want, so it's great for pure math if you don't mind studying with a lot of non-purists.

I'd say that MIT and Princeton have the best pure math. Chicago has some GREAT math professors, though.

The top 5 pure math programs in the country (no particular order):
Harvard
MIT
Michigan
Chicago
Princeton

Caltech gets an honorable mention I guess. Stanford is more applied in its scope, and caltech is really small, so they don't get spots. Michigan might come as a surprise, but its honors math track is intensely theoeretical and covers the same material as Harvard's Math 55 in its first 3 semesters (but goes a little more in-depth than Harvard does), and adds a topology/differential geometry course at the end to finish off the frosh/soph honors sequence. MIT, Chicago, and Princeton have longstanding mathematics traditions and Harvard is...well...Harvard. They basically tie MIT in landing the best math students nationwide every year.

You asked specifically about NUMBER THEORY. How far have you gone in number theory in particular, and pure mathematics in general? Your needs will vary depending on how far you have already gone.
