Purpose of sending scores to colleges early?

I have almost no clue where I'm going to college, and the CB says you can put up to 4 schools you want the scores for SATs sent to for free. Last time I took the IIc I didn't put down any colleges to send it to, yet my friends are all like, "Well, it's free, why not?".

What's the purpose? Should you just do it, or doesn't it just show up when you ask for a score report to be sent to the colleges you apply to anyway?

Yeah, I'm just super confused on the sending scores to colleges thing. Would someone care to clarify on this?

When you ask the CB to send scores to a college, the scores are sent electronically and the college will keep them on file until/if you send in an application. Most colleges probably receive hundreds of score reports and sending in your scores early will most likely not be viewed as anything special.

As a junior (or younger), if you apply to some of the top-50 colleges, you will most likely have to take the new SAT and 2 or 3 SAT II tests. The score reports that you send in the future will include your SAT I score and all previous SAT II scores, and this is what colleges will need before they make any decisions. In other words, sending scores out now won't hurt, but it won't necessarily help you either, since colleges will need a final score report before they ever consider your application. If anything, sending your scores will get you added to the colleges massive mailing list.

wait...so sending out those four scores don't count as the ones you send out for your app.? I thought by sending them out now, I won't have to send those out senior year. hmmm....I'm confused. So, on the SAT when you send out this official report, it lists all of your scores of all the tests? What about the ACT?

I am taking the SAT for the first time in March, and the ACT in April...I put down the same four colleges on both. So, if I do terrible, it won't matter, or.....?
