Purpose of SSN for college applications

I recently completed a couple of college applications which asked for my SSN. During this process I plugged in my supposed SSN to find out that the # that my mom gave me was I 1 digit off in a particular section. Will this cause a problem for me? My mom said that the schools use this for the sole purpose of identification, but I am not completely satisfied. I'm concerned that if the school uses my SSN for other purposes, they will realize that something is not matching up and I may not qualify for grants or scholarships. I'm also concerned that if they try to run some sort of check they will realize that I am not who I say I am and may not even get accepted or something like that. Can anyone please clarify things for me?

Thanks.

Correct the number. If you get FA it will be under the listed SSN. If you get enough to have to report income it will show up on someone else.

Email the colleges/universities.

Tell them that you have just noticed that the SSN on the forms is one digit off.

Give them the correct SSN.

This kind of thing happens all the time. Don’t worry about it. Just fix it.
