Put in dorm that I do not want to be in...

I was assigned Roble Hall. This seems like the worst choice for me. I am a social kid and I like to party, probably more so than most of my Stanford peers. I like a social and fun atmosphere and all of High School I have been apart of a very big social scene. I do not want to be in a dorm room that does not suite these social interests of mine. Is there anyway to switch? I also stayed in FroSoCo during AW and I hated the location. So basically Roble is also in a terrible spot on campus. Ughhh. Any advice?

Roble is a beautiful and historic dormitory. In fact, my mother lived there in the 1950’s.

Accept the instincts of the administration. I’m sure they had a reason for your placement. Sometimes we learn more from discomfort and inconvenience than from more narrow perspectives.

dapotatoman, Roble is a very cool dorm. First off, it actually houses more freshmen than any of the all-freshmen dorms (because it’s large), and the freshmen are all grouped together on the lower floor. They do all the same freshmen bonding activities that go on at Wilbur and Stern. It has really nice quads that are good for socializing. Plus, having some upperclassmen around can be a good thing sometimes–trust me on this. As for location, it’s not as far from the main quad as FroSoCo, and the atmosphere is also livelier than FroSoCo. Give it a chance, I think you’ll enjoy it.

You are in college, not high school.

The experience will be different.

My sister-in-law started in Roble as a freshman and is still close to her friends from that time, many years later. I think you are going to love it once you get settled.

I lived in Roble back in my freshman year and loved it. 5 years later I still hang out with my friends from Roble and we went to Vegas together and had a blast. We threw some sick parties in Roble and it was an awesome place to stay. You will love it and there will be plenty of fun and parties. With 150 freshmen there are always a solid number who will want to go out and have fun. Don’t worry. Just cause its a 4 class dorm doesnt mean it wont be fun.

I lived in Roble my freshman year and later an all-frosh dorm as a staff member. What I liked about Roble was that there was still a strong social scene yet on school nights I was able to get my work done. It was a cozy place, looking back. The large size of the dorm also allows for dozens of dorm programming activities. What I didn’t like was how the halls led to cliques, and similarly how I didn’t know a large portion of the dorm. At least my year, we didn’t really have a pipeline into frats/sororities, which can be good or bad depending on your perspective about Greek life.

On the other hand, the all-frosh dorm can be a mess sometimes. And whereas the community may be stronger, I think the GPAs are generally lower.

Do I second guess wanting to be in a four-class dorm my freshman year? Sometimes. But I am largely content with where I am now, and had I been in an all-frosh dorm I know things would have been different.

I was completely p*ssed off at my dorm placement. I was ready to start a fight about it. Turns out that not only did I absolutely love it, almost all of my friends are from that dorm and I’m actually returning this year.

Have a little faith. My S didn’t know anyone who was unhappy with their dorms. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Keep an open mind. If you like to party there are plenty of opportunities. The Frats are very inviting and open to everyone. You should have no problem socializing.

Good Luck and welcome to the FARM!!!

Why dont you be the change you want to see? Be a social person and others will surely follow

How did you feel about your freshman year at Roble? My son is in the same situation now; his first choice was an all freshman dorm and he was placed in Roble. He is going with a positive attitude and trusts the placement decision. He would be interested in your experience and thoughts based on your 2012 comment. Also can you provide any information on the quad dorm dimensions? Stanford has a link to a floor plan but no dimensions or additional information.
