Putting a hold on scholarship awards

How lenient are scholarship "givers" in postponing the awarding of the money? (rather than writing the check out this year, which will expire in 3 months, and writing it next year instead)

i've already reached the limit i can replace my self-help aid with scholarship money, and i dont want the extra to just be absorbed into the insitutional grant, so i was just wondering if it would be possible/heard of for granters to delay the award?

bumppppppppppppp

dyx, We are in the same boat. I think it depends on the organization. First thing to try, is see if the organization has the flexibility to write the check directly to you. Most do not. Ask the school if there is any flexibility to use the scholarship toward non-scholarhip type of expenses, books, a lap top computer, etc. You will have to ask the organization directly if they can post date the check until next year. Our S won an award from the Elks and they could not budge. Most likely we will turn it down and let the Elks give it to someone else. We currently have an appeal going with the University to see if there is any flexibility to use the funds to buy a lap top. Haven't heard back yet. If you find any unique solution, please pass it on and I will do the same.

One of my scholarships is made out in my name, but since the check has an expiration dates of 3 months, i'll have to cash it in this year, hence requiring me to report it to the school. Most schools do allow a one time computer cost of 1000 if your scholarship goes over. I'm in the running for the Elks too, was your son's award from a local/state chapter?

Son's is local only for $1,000.
