GSO and Daughter will be in the house!! Arriving way too early Saturday morning.

Party in SU88’s room!! Executive level was sold out when I booked the room. Dang you CC parents booking rooms in the spring back when I was clueless!!

I too could’ve handily driven to NYC, but Chicago seemed like the better deal–more colleges, more days, seemed more relaxed.

Husband and son will be at PHH on Saturday. Please help the poor man if you see him. I will be putting him through MT Audition boot camp prior to the trip, Seven auditions scheduled if pre-screens pull through. Son is interested in Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and an older thread indicated they took walk-ins in the past. I am taking son to the NYC Unifieds the weekend before. Due to my work contract and a wedding in Palm Springs in May, I did not have time to go with son. I’ll be thinking about you all and wishing I was there!

D would be thrilled if RCS took walk-ins…she was on their site for a few hours yesterday trying to decide if she wanted to go through the application process and secure an audition time. Her unified schedule is pretty packed already.

We will be at PHH also. We arrive on Saturday and are staying on the Executive Level. Kategrizz, we also took advantage of CMU’s Thursday availability. We have 2 auditions on the way home. We should definitely all get together!

My D will be at Chicago and we are staying at the the Palmer House. Only have four schools set so far, but waiting on prescreen results from some. Can’t wait to meet all of you.

Just FYI for those of you wondering…RCS did walk ins at NY Unifieds last year. Not only that, but they sent (American) students around roaming the halls to recruit people to come audition! The students were very nice and said they loved it there. My D wanted to stay in the States so we did not do the audition, but others did. If I remember correctly, though, one of the turn-offs was that if you passed the singing/monologue portion, the dance call was a CB pretty late that night, and many people were leaving. Maybe they will change that this year.

My son is also interested in RCS. We’re wondering if we should submit the app to secure an audition day/time, or just wing-it and hope for a walk-in spot.

I went on the PHH website last night and saw this note: Please Note: Our Executive Lounge will be closed and unavailable to guests staying December 29th to March 5th, 2014.

Argh-- I had booked-- and paid extra $$ for-- the Executive Level because of the EL lounge and amenities, and it was a major factor in deciding to go to Chicago Unifieds vs. NY.

Well… I emailed the PHH, inquiring if they were going to provide EL services elsewhere on the property, and received this response: “As it gets closer to the executive level closure, guests who have booked rooms on these levels will be contacted and arrangements will be made.”

…sigh… I know-- not a deal-breaker, but I’m taking time off of work, spending a lot of $$, and was actually looking forward to staying in a little bit nicer place than I usually stay in. I’ll have to hang with my homies someplace else.

SU88BFA, since I’m not staying on the exec level… You still have a room, but the lounge-y area will be closed? Is that where breakfast is to take place? I’m supposed to have free breakfast while I’m there and didn’t know where that would be. Do I also need to relocate my homie hanging? LOL

Bethsmom. The official Unifieds are the 24th-26th. But some other schools that normally hold auditions in New York City alongside Unifieds like Purchase and UNCSA at first posted auditions on Super Bowl weekend of Feb 1 and 2. It seems they have now switched to the Jan 24-26 weekend. Although CMU is in the middle of that week. When I was planning our audition schedule weeks ago the schools my D wanted to audition for were scattered over both NY weekends. So I said forget this; I don’t want to be paying NY prices two weeks in a row and we booked Chicago.

I just looked at websites again because of your question and there have been schedule changes since I first reviewed everything. Sorry if that was confusing. You probably can hit quite a few schools on that Jan 24-26 weekend in NY now.

Thanks dramamom0804; I feel like I need a PhD in scheduling! Only those who are living through this can appreciate the unbelievable amount of work involved.

You’re right, dramamom, the schools finally decided to change their dates from the first weekend in Feb to the prior weekend. Even with the change, I felt Chicago was the better option since it’s a day longer and some schools are taking advantage of Sunday making it two days longer!

I’ve read through the posts and it looks like there will be opportunities for walk in auditions in both NY and Chicago. I’m guessing that you do not have to apply to the school until you have auditioned? And, will they give you an indication of acceptance to the program there, or will they defer their decision just like the rest of the schools? If they defer, then I’m guessing you have to apply to the school in order to get a decision? What comes first, the chicken or the egg?

Re: the walk-ins. Your S or D can apply afterwards, though they may not have much time. there are a few schools that do not allow this – I think Ithaca --but most of the ones that allow walk-ins let you file afterwards.

Also bring your checkbook (some schools charge audition fees), additional headshots and resumes and some sealed transcripts (you can get these from your guidance counselor). We didn’t need the transcripts, but I’ve heard that sometimes schools want them.

My son did one walk-in for SCAD and he had a pretty good idea that he’d been accepted afterwards (the rep was talking about the scholarships he’d qualify for at the end of the interview). he also had an opportunity to walk-in at Miami University but decided not to.

I loved our time at NY Unifieds, even though it was very stressful, because it was the first time we really had any idea of whether this was a reasonable thing for my son to try – and it became clear that it was.

Try to enjoy the good stuff, see a show while you’re there, eat well, enjoy your kid (who, if successful, will be a much more distant presence in a year)…it’s very exciting. I hope it goes well for you.

Is there a list on this board of which schools will be auditioning at hotels other than the Palmer House? (I assume the Palmer House list will be about the same as 2013?) Is it also possible to walk in at off-site locations? Thanks!
