How the fact that uci > 50% asian affect student/campus life, if at all? Any positive/negative experiences related directly to this fact?

I don't think it has really affected social life or anything like that. I am white myself, but I have a lot of Asian friends and white friends. Since coming to UCI I have become more cultured with "Asianness" I suppose, which I just see as a positive---becoming better acquainted with other cultures. I have never felt excluded or anything, although maybe the people I hang out with don't care or maybe I'm just pretty laid back about racial things. Overall my experience here as been very positive.

well uci is one of the safest school, which i think may be attributed to the asianess of the school. it allows your campus life to be more laid back and you dont have to worry about crimes and such.

pooball, do you live on campus?

hawaii is >60% asian

no im going there next year, but i have a lot of friends and 2 cousins there

Thank you, JinFX. You actually just helped me to make a decision!

Eufan... so are ya goin or not :-)?

I drove around the entire campus today for like 35 minutes and I couldn't find the "park". I went to the KFC/Taco Bell at the center place thingee and something really funny happened. I remember someone posting on some site that the restaurant will never give u water. Well, I order a crunchwrap supreme and an individual coleslaw (i know... weird combination). I also asked for a cup of water (i totally forgot about the site) when ordering. They confirm my order including the water and I pulled up to get my food. I see the food guy talking on his cell phone like I don't exist. I get my food and I notice the water was missing. I tell the guy, "I asked for water..." and he (STILL TALKING ON THE CELL in SPANISH!) grabs a fork and hands it to me... I repeat that I asked for water and he finally notices i'm there and he thinks for like 30 seconds (still holding the cell to his ear) and he is like "umm... sorry we don't have any cups." Then it clicks that i've heard about this before so I tell the guy "this is b-s... how can u not have cups?" (after getting my food of course... see the movie "Waited" for reference) and i speed away. All of this on the first day of seeing the campus.... it's gonna be a long 4-5 years.

amiradaprincess
cute story...:)
I'm sure there are other places to eat though.

That was our worry about UCI, it seemed kind of hard to find places to eat or hang out when we visited there. Especially, are there any student-friendly cafes or coffeehouses that are not part of a major chain? The whole area seems so "corporate" but maybe we overlooked something. Is there anyplace that is considered to have local character, or does Irvine not have a character other than corporate office buildings....I am concerned it won't be fun to live there.

When we went over to Costa Mesa, the atmosphere seemed less sterile, more of a "normal" town. But our visit was awfully short, can anybody fill us in on where UCI students like to hang out?

Amiradaprincess, I wonder if you can bring your own cup to Taco Bell, haha? I would, as a protest. You worked hard to get in to this school, you deserve to be treated better!!

UCI has a pub that is quite popular, and run by students. In a recent remodel there was the threat of closure, but the students prevailed and kept it open. I think it is called the Anteater Pub, but I'm not positive.

The pub is definitely not open right now. It's called the Anthill Pub. Hopefully it'll be back when they complete the student center.

Typical places that students walk to from campus:

Lee's Sandwiches (really cheap)
Taco Bell/KFC
In-n-out
Cha for Tea (Get your boba fix)
Jack-in-the-box (which is open 24/7 and has wireless)
Starbucks
Del Taco (On Tues.--3 tacos for $1.09)

There are more places around campus but those are the ones that I think of when I think of places to eat/chill off campus. There are of course places further off campus that require a car to get to. L&Ls has great Hawaiian food and Alertos has good fast legit Mexican food. Just to name a few.

There are more places on campus but they're more expensive. Probably the most popular is cornerstone cafe which is way overpriced. I'm sure there will be a lot of change in on-campus food/places to hang out once the new student center gets completed.

Do you know when the student center will be finished?

Thanks yackityack, good details!

I think the student center is supposed to be finished in fall 2007
