Quakers with low SAT

Maybe it is the insecurtiy speaking, but I want to know if anyone else was accepted with lower SAT/ACT scores? Does anyone feel like sharing? I got a 2030 and a 31...

The mid range (50%) is about 2100-2300 or 31-34. That being said, 25% of admitted students score below 2100 or 31.

Seriously, they’re no reason to be insecure. My daughter, who graduated college last year (from a different University), was lower quartile of SATs when she entered. She ended up graduating in 4 years with 2 degrees in the top 10% of her class and is now attending graduate school at Harvard. If my daughter’s friends are representative, it’s the students with higher SATs who convince themselves that they’re smart enough to get by without working hard or who just lose interest that get into trouble.

Remember, the admissions staff obviously saw things in your application that made them confident that you would be successful at Penn. They’re rarely wrong about this, Penn has an aggregate graduation rate of 95%.

It’s all good. I got ED Acceptance and I’m a 2080; plus, I didn’t even take the ACTs.

I was half-nervous when I opened the physical letter because I still didn’t entirely trust my online decision :P

And to respond to HomerJ, you’re totally right. That’s the attitude they gave me in late middle school to high school because of my gifted education program and academic preference and all that. I got the attitude that I could just coast by, (senioritis for 5 years) and I did coast my A’s, but I should have done better. Had I worked harder I wouldn’t have the 2 Bs I had for finals and the spotty areas of knowledge that I do now. Getting accepted to Penn has actually encouraged me to finish out strong.

My sister, RD 1900.
My friends, 2000 and 2070, ED

SuperFan99: Where did those numbers come from? I am pretty sure that last year’s data was 2020 - 2290 and 30-34. I realize that those numbers represent the mid-50, but thank you.

homerj: Thank you for the inspiring reality! I do not doubt that I am determined enough to be successful in college and in life, but there were some bratty kids with better scores (and did not get in) who made me question myself a bit.

mailclu: Good for you! I felt the same way, especially since it was just the two pieces of paper!

worthgold: Cool to know!

So, where are we from? I am from the northeastern (poor) part of CT. I’m so excited for next year!

Can someone with a 21 ACT score just get in. I would love to see that. It happens from time to time every now and again.

I got two 31s (with a 32 superscore–damn the science section), didn’t submit any other test scores, and got into Wharton ED. Getting into Penn with lower test scores can happen but it is just less likely than if you had high test scores. A high unweighted GPA is also in your favor to supplement weaker test scores.

Based on the acceptances, I’m starting to believe how a lot of the competitive schools, especially Ivies, look to see that your test scores are in their mid-50s range, and then after that, focus solely on what you bring to the table and how you will add and benefit to their school. I did not get into Wharton with my test scores–I got in because of my extracurriculars, personal qualities, and recommendations.

Best of luck!

It was hard for me to digest at first (maybe?), but I definitely agree with Maybobby…Penn wants passion!

^I had a relatively low SAT Score: 2080. But then I took the ACT and was able to get a 34, might be a 35. Lesson learned: Try the other standardized test as well, it might work for you.

Penn definitely wants passion, and I had a lot of it in my app…
To answer your question, I’m from VA, near the NW part. I live in a fairly developed area that still has a lot of rural influence and heavy conservatism.

mailclu, I can relate–there is heavy conservatism over here, and it sucks. I just joined the facebook group for class of 2015, woot!

bahahaha I had a 1980 and a 31
Applied ED–> Deferred –> Admitted –> Still labeled as an ED student by the school.

You’re fine if you have other substantial things on your resume (:

Moon, that’s awesome. I want to join the group really badly, but I’m at least waiting until I can submit my decision and get my financial aid ironed out. (Just need to do that 400 dollar deposit). Haha, I guess I’m just tentative still about Penn somehow being taken away :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m working my butt off to keep HS grades up because of that.
