quality of life and a few other questions

well to start off I am a Canadian-born (toronto) and US-raised (dallas) high school senior. I'm thinking of applying to a couple of canadian universities and mcgill is one of the definite ones. Im having trouble choosing another Canadian Uni (out of UBC, UofT, or some other suggestion).

My stats are 1520/2250 on the SAT, top 8%, ranked 104/1277 students, taken as many AP/honors as possible, 4.02 W GPA, school doesnt give UW but its probably a 3.5ish.

I want to do a premed program but major in journalism & probably also neuroscience/biology. I know journalism probably isnt offered at any Canadian Uni. So would any of these interests (esp journalism) fit in at McGill? If not can someone give me another suggestion?

Additionally how rigorous are Mcgill academics?
are classes too large to be able to get to know your profs?
How is the quality of life at Mcgill/Montreal (the language barrier, meeting new people, etc.)?

I know i have alot of questions but cud someone help me out a bit? Thanks in advance.

My sister went to McGill so i can tell you:

-The academics are VERY rigorous, you'll have to stay on the ball
-Classes are fairly large, but after 2nd year, you'll find theyre small and dandy. Whether or not they're small or big shouldn't affect knowing profs, as they are usually open to students
-Quality of life in Montreal is superb, and there is no language barrier, as downtown Montreal is mostly english speaking. People are friendly, it's a wonderful atmosphere, although it can be a little cold, and the crowd on the streets can be ridiculous.

Cheers

Thanks very much. If I want to major in something liberal artsy but do premed then what faculty shud i apply for?

by the way is anything even remotely resembling Journalism offered at either McGill, UBC, or UofT?

About journalism:

I'm not too sure about UBC but McGill doesn't offer a Journalism program.
UofT offers a journalism program but I would not go to UofT for journalism. The two best schools in the country for that would be Carleton in Ottawa and/or Ryerson in Toronto.

I concur -- for journalism, carleton = best

lol okay screw journalism then. would i be able to take a few classes here and there for journalism atleast?

can someone tell me the pros and cons of UBC UofT and McGill since I dont kno much about them.

Why so dead set on journalism at UofT or McGill?

If you're dream schools are UofT/McGill and you're dead set on becoming a journalist than you can join the student papers. The McGill Daily is the oldest student run newspaper in North America and a whole bunch of actual journalist and famous writers got started there.

Well most of the schools im applying to are in USA, but I might apply to UofT and Mcgill since Canada is a hell of alot cheaper. Plus Im from canada and most of my family is up there

I hav come to the conclusion that I will just work my ass off on the school newspaper no matter what uni I go to, and i don't necessarily NEED a journalism major. Mcgill and UofT would offer me a kickass education and I kno that.

Also, since I probably won't get much scholarship money from American unis. The onlly cheap alternative in the US is in-state schools (for me that means UT-austin).

Plus, Canada is my home away from home and I love that country to death, and i would die for teh Toronto Raptors.

Taking all this into consideration, the education, the options, the finances, the fact that Canada is like my backyard, I am considering Mcgill and UofT MUCH more heavily than I was before. I am most def. gona apply and we will see if I get in.

and thanks to all the replies.

UBC has a journalism program, and it's a good school, but not best known for journalism or anything. It has a great campus though.

i thought UBc's journo was for graduate studies only

Yeah, I believe so.

hey thedoverdemon, do you know if journalism classes are offered for undergrads at UBC?

Check out this link: http://www.journalism.ubc.ca/index.html

Unfortunately, UBC only offers Journalism as a graduate degree, so there are no undergraduate Journalism courses.
