Hi all,

I'm an international student and I'm keen to apply for college in the U.S. However, I'm going to take my A-levels at the end of this year and I don't know which quarter to apply to. I know that there are the summer, fall, and spring quarter but how are the students sorted out? I know high school students typically graduate in June and they can apply and get into colleges for the fall quarter in the same year. How does this system work? For me, I have to wait till 2014 to be able to start school because A-level results will only be released in March next year. Which means I would graduate a year older than typical college students. I was also told by someone that colleges in the US sort students out by the month that they were born? Like those born after september will be in one year and those before will be in another year. Is this true? Could someone please explain this to me as I would like to apply for colleges with my preliminary/ projected grades soon! Thank you!

Colleges don’t sort anyone by birth date.

Most undergrad colleges have application deadlines for each year while some have open admissions for different quarters or semesters.

You should apply for next year fall if you are a senior this year (you are a senior if you are taking exams at the end of the year).

Hi, if the college I want to go to has open admissions for different quarters, does it mean that I am able to go for say, the spring/summer quarter? Would this affect anything at all? (as in the quarter that I apply to)

Go to the college websites, look for the page for Admissions Deadlines, they will tell you when they accept students and the dates you must apply by.

Entering in the winter/spring/summer qt/sem, might affect: admissions (as it may be on a ‘space available’ basis), financial aid, housing, course selection (both priority in scheduling and the fact that often year long course sequences begin in the fall), and meeting people (since most fr enter in the fall).

You are an international student needing a student visa. I doubt you can go for a visa for spring if you can’t produce graduation certificate?

Summer is always possible but as entomom says colleges have all sorts of issues with that.

What college(s) are you applying to? Rather than speculate about some arbitrary question, you can ask about specific schools so people can help you discuss them.
