Queen's Commerce v. Western Ivey HBA

I've finally accepted offers of admission from the two of my dream schools in Canada, and have decided I'll be attending either one of them...

I prefer a university that really helps me understand and know the business curriculum but also ensures that I'll have a mid-high paying salary by the time of graduation.

I'm also looking into applying to US MBA schools (e.g. Wharton, Kellogg, Sloan, etc.) so reputation / alumni network is very important as well!

I don't mind doing the 2+2 year thing at Western but would prefer to transfer from QComm to Ivey...any suggestions / comments?

LET ME KNOW IF YOU'VE GOT ANY ACCEPTANCE TO EITHER ONE OF THESE SCHOOLS!! :D

Hey, I just wanted to know did you have a lot of extra curriculars during high school in order to be accepted into both these programs?

hey queensyy,
i don’t think the number of extra curricular activities are important, although i’ve had varsity tennis, varsity swim, founder and co-president of debating club and DECA club (business) and had 650 volunteer hours as assistant swim instructor, pianist at a senior home including an internship at marriott hotel as a bell boy :stuck_out_tongue:
just get 90% and you’ll have NO prob’s getting in, there are kids here at Queen’s, (i chose queen’s :P) who’ve had high eighties but no lower than 88-ish.
everything from there is your essays and extra curriculars!

don’t hesitate to post more questions! :)

actually i meant 90% and you’ll have no problem getting in *BECAUSE OF MARKS.
there are tons of 95% + and do note that 54%+ of students at queen’s had above 90% average and about 25% had above 95%…but don’t be discouraged by marks, just focus on your essays!! they’re, i belive, what got me in :)

Wow thanks for the quick reply
Western’s HBA program really confuses me because of its 2+2 year program. Does it mean that I can do anything for the first 2 years like engineering? Isn’t that kind of a waste of two years of hard work?

Oh and are there any reasons you would recommend one university over the other? I know you chose Queen’s but was there any particular reason for that?

At the undergraduate level, from experience and from what I’ve read, there seems to be minuscule differences between the two.

The only difference I would consider is whether or not the last two years of HBA would really prepare you for your future occupation, versus the 4 years of business education at Queen’s.

I guess it’s all about which degree fits you and what your goals are.

I know some of my friends opted to go into the AEO program because they were queasy about pursuing a business career. Some found this helpful and eventually pursued science or completed double majors, the HBA offered them flexibility.

But in terms of placement, they both place similarly, with Queen’s having a slightly higher number in finance. These numbers are not necessarily reflective of their reputation in the industry, rather a reflection of student interests and goals.

EcceHomo is correct. I chose Queen’s because after visiting the campus (via debate tournaments throughout my high school life) I just enjoyed the campus more, preferred to start the business education early (and we also take courses from the Arts and Science faculty and are ALSO offered a chance to pursue a double major) so I figured that the “flexibility” argument wasn’t as appealing to me after some investigation.

Further more, Queen’s, in my opinion, has a more academic feel. My friends at Western tell me about the party atmosphere and the crazy weekends even during exams; I wanted a studious atmosphere that would encourage me to work, and that’s why it was Queen’s.

In addition, Western is considered a “large university” while Queen’s is a “medium” meaning we have smaller class sizes, more interaction with classmates and professors. It’s just a better experience overall :)

^ One of my relatives goes to Queen’s. It’s nothing special. Even QC, which I think is the newest building, is a dump. Anyways, their I-bank recruiting is almost as good as Ivey’s HBA, but they suck for consulting and some other competitive job roles. I believe this year the tally for BCG is 6 at Ivey vs 1 at Queen’s. And they have almost the same class size.

And who cares if one program is more selective than the other? Penn-Wharton’s Undergraduate program is MUCH less selective than Yale, Princeton and even Columbia, but crushes them when it comes to recruiting.

Bottom line: If you want the best business recruiting in Canada, go to Ivey HBA.

Haha PrincetonDreams, I don’t think you should be making any “tallys” like that considering I personally know 3 upper year friends going to BCG, but your determination to make Ivey HBA look more appealing is certainly admirable and cute.

It makes no different at all which of these schools you go to. It is simply a matter of fit with different attributes. But as for actual education, network, first job opportunities, salary, career trajectory, does not matter one iota.

which would be cheaper?
