queen's court

what are the perks of being in queen's court? What is so special about it?

1-Smallest and oldest dorm: very cozy. Historic landmark (and I do mean it’s a NYC landmark building). Many feel it has the most traditional charm.
2-Tight community, strong academic group that does some really cool things as a group.
3-The main hall has a nice fireplace, stain-glass windows and is super-gothic, befitting it’s age. Very Oxford/Cambridge looking: like something out of a Harry Potter movie.

OH…and perhaps I won’t talk about the ghost that supposedly resides there, but find it fun to mention none-the-less.

From the website:
Queen’s Court Residential College, an intentional community of one hundred-fifty residents, was established to assist in the integration of first year students into University life. Its inception in 1987 was a response to a felt need for a living experience that would embody the best qualities of a Jesuit education: a devotion to learning, respect for tradition, and a commitment to community living without the involvement of alcohol or drugs. Queen’s Court is a combination of three halls – St. John’s Hall, Robert’s Hall and Bishop’s Hall. Each is steeped in the history and traditions of Fordham University. Bishop’s hall houses the main lounge, one of the most elegant rooms of the university. It serves as a quiet study area and a gathering place for house programs. Other facilities include a social lounge, kitchen, dinette, group study areas and a classroom. Each semester, core curriculum courses are offered in Queen’s Court as part of the Residential College experience. They are taught by outstanding faculty members.

Here is a nice 360 view on the main lounge:

There will be boobirds who come on here and pooh-pooh Queen’s Court. It is a special place. Though other dorms are also special in their own right for very different reasons. The point is to establish community and help kids make the HUGE adjustment from home life to college life, the ardor of the Fordham work load and for some, a huge adjustment to life in New York City.

While its ostensibly a drug free and alcohol free dorm, sadly many abuse that oath/privilege, disgracing themselves. However, most abide by it, or at least attempt to follow the rules most of the time. (Alcohol is allowed in upperclassmen apts for those 21 and over). Queens is 100% freshmen dorm.

Some fun things happen too…like the dances under the pipes in the basement late at night to let the anxiety out. Those are not officially sanctioned but were basically all academic stars and good kids just dancing to loud music and being silly at night.

Queens is not alone, but does tend to have a lot of academic super stars…many Honors students in its ranks. Friends made in Queens often stay friends for years…and life.

Caveat: you should know that the shock of the workload and rigor (depth) of studies at Fordham (and all colleges) is what makes kids blowout, misbehave and get depressed. Being in New York amongst some pretty competitive kids in perhaps the most competitive city in the world is also an adjustment. Not scaring anyone, just facing reality. Come prepared to work hard. If you do your work, on a set schedule, reach out to friends and faculty, you will be fine. Queens is a great experience, with some added spice. There were lots of tears on moving out day (after final exams in the spring). So much happens freshmen year…and so much dorm drama. Its normal.

At first some dorms get a bit cliquey and stand offish…one from the others. But that soon wears thin and as people reach out to new friends in new courses, they are seen making friends in every dorm. My kid’s best friends all dormed in Queens and Loschert (North).

Selecting a dorm choice is one of the first (and fun) things you will do this summer, if not already. Don’t obsess about it. If you get what you want, great. If not, fear not. IT all resolves.

Good luck to all in the coming year, and here is hoping for an outstanding football and basketball season for the Fordham Rams. From the look of things (recruiting) it should be a banner year!

As usual,Sovereigndebt, you add a lot of good information, detail and depth to a thread.
