QuestBridge Class of 2017 Regular Decision Applicant Thread

Hey! So I don’t know if this has been a thing in the past, but I decided to make a thread for those who opted out of or didn’t get in through match. I want to see where the rest of my fellow questies are getting in!

So I’m dying to know: how many schools did you apply to!? What are your tops right now? What is it about them? Have any of you gotten a likely letter or early offer of admission? If you got in through ED or EA, CONGRATULATIONS!!! Where are you going?

I’ll start :slight_smile: I originally applied to 27 total (a lot of them had no extra supps… and I’m insecure) but dropped about half because of CSS PROFILE costs ($16/school for an electronic form to prove you’re poor is ridiculous). Tufts is the absolute dream! though I wouldn’t mind getting into Yale or Brown or Amherst. I’m more of a fan of big city and laid back environment than rural or cutthroat. And Grinnell swept me off my feet a few days ago with that admission letter <3

PS: Please join the QuestBridge Class of 2017 Facebook group if you haven’t already! It’s such an amazing group imo

Heyy, I applied to Rice, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Duke, and Brown for National College Match. Didn’t get matched, and so I added in UVA, Emory, and Yale to that list for regular. :slight_smile: :slight_smile: I had a total of 15 schools I applied to (questbridge + all others). I only paid for the apps of 3 schools thanks to QB and CollegeBoard’s fee waivers. My dream school is Rice University <3 wanna go there soooo bad.
Most of my schools are out-of-state, cuz I wanna get out of Virginia. lol.

For the national college match, I applied to Macalester, UChicago, Pomona, Claremont-Mckenna, Carleton, Scripps, and Northwestern. I didn’t get matched, so I only continued my application with Macalester and Pomona. However, I did add Vassar, Wellesley, and Haverford to the RD list. All in all, I applied to 15 schools RD including QB and non-QB schools.

I’d be incredibly excited if I got into Mac or Wellesley, but I really like all of the schools that I chose RD because the schools I chose were better controlled. When I did the match, since it was binding I had to choose schools that were close to family because I didn’t want to be bound to go somewhere alone unless I was sure I can handle it. With RD, I chose schools that I really felt would be positive for me, regardless of location.

Congrats on Grinnell!

@yuccatree Thank you! It’s a little surreal that I’m actually going to college :slight_smile: ps I love yucas too

@Katyedfd I can confirm Houston is amazing! There’s lots to do and it’s such a big city. I take it you want to go into STEM?

@latinvibes
That’s great to hear!! I haven’t been able to find the time/money-sorta to actually fly/drive down to Houston :frowning:
Yup, STEM is what I’m looking at right now. I’m not 100% set on a specific major, so I do want to keep my options open :slight_smile: Only thing is…I don’t think my test scores are good enough rip me

@Katyedfd Admissions are holistic at Rice (and I believe at most QuestBridge-related schools), so test scores will not necessarily make or break your decision. Plus, you’re a finalist so you already have proven yourself to be a competitive candidate. :slight_smile:

@latinvibes What do you want to major in? Have you had the chance to visit any of the schools that you applied to? (Also, yeah, yuccas are pretty cool! I have a ton of them where I live, so it felt natural to set that as my username haha)

@Katyedfd Admissions are HOLISTIC. H O L I S T I C! I know a girl who got into Columbia with a 26 ACT (23 her first time). It’s your story that matters.

@yuccatree I applied everywhere as a poli sci major but now I’m not so sure about it lol. I haven’t visited any of the schools because they’re so far and plane tickets are expensive (and I didn’t know what fly-ins were until they were all over). But Grinnell is flying me in for free in a couple of weeks so I’m excited for that.

@latinvibes It’s great that you can visit Grinnell for free! Hopefully you can get a feel for the campus and decide if it is right for you. :slight_smile: I myself haven’t visited any colleges yet because of the cost of travel. I had no clue that fly-ins even existed, either.

Also political science, cool! Even if you change your mind, growing and developing new interests is part of college. I applied for biology everywhere, but I don’t know what I want to do with my degree yet. It’s just a bunch of ideas floating about everywhere.

@latinvibes Thanks for the assurances, I needed that :slight_smile:

I should’ve gone through with the national college match but I got too full of myself and applied ED to Columbia. I was rejected.

Crossing my fingers for a school on the East coast! I need to go there because my family’s moving back to New Jersey.

Did any of you guys get a likely letter, by any chance?

@daboombas I didn’t get a likely letter, but I don’t think that any of the schools I applied to send out them (Wellesley does have Early Evaluation but I decided to skip on it to spend more time on essays).

What schools did you apply to for RD?

@yuccatree
My list (that I can think off the top of my head) is:
Brown
Dartmouth
Harvard
Yale
UPenn
Princeton
Pomona
Wesleyan
Amherst
USC
UVA
UChicago
Stanford
Vanderbilt
Duke
ASU

I pretty much threw my bid in to any school I had an interest in that partnered with Questbridge. I only have one safety (ASU).

What about you?

@daboombas Wow that is quite a list! I didn’t apply to that many QuestBridge schools because of time constraints, what was it like filling out so many apps? Or were the supplements kind of bearable?

I applied to:
UChicago (I forgot to list them my QuestBridge app for regular decision, idk if that means I’m in the regular decision pool independent of QuestBridge lol. I did rank them, though)

(QuestBridge)
Haverford
Macalester
Pomona
Vassar
Wellesley

(Public Schools)
CSU San Marcos
CSU San Bernardino
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
Cal Poly Pomona
UC Irvine
UC San Diego
UC Merced
UC Berkeley
Northern Arizona University

I probably went overboard with safeties (CSUSM, CSUSB, CPP, UCM, and NAU) but I had no clue what to expect (plus fee waivers…).

Are there any particular schools on the list that you like, or is it more or less the same for all schools?

@yuccatree

To be honest, the apps were not time-consuming. I actually enjoyed writing my supplements, for some reason.

I would particularly love to attend Brown for its educational flexibility, or Dartmouth for its tight community. UChicago would be great too, since I actually know an alumni personally who told me about the college’s intellectual vitality and the endless opportunities she received while there.

What about you? Do you have any specific schools in mind?

@daboombas Probably a tie between UCSD, Macalester, and Wellesley. UCSD because it’s close to home, overall pretty nice, and the “six college” concept seems like fun because it allows for like-minded people to interact. I liked Macalester because of nearby family, plus the atmosphere and cultural landscape of the campus. Wellesley for a similar reason, but the only draw would be that I would be completely alone.

Also, it’s good to know that supplements weren’t too time consuming. I probably spent way too long on mine lol.

Hope you hear good news this month!!

I applied to 2 schools through the National College Match: Stanford and Yale. I wasn’t matched, and then opted out of QuestBridge Regular Decision, while still applying to QuestBridge schools. I ultimately applied to 9 schools: Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Harvard, Duke, Reed, and two in-state universities. While Stanford and Princeton are my dream schools, I’d be perfectly happy going to any of the schools on my list.

Hello everyone! I applied through QB College Match and I didn’t match to any schools. The schools I listed were: University of Pennsylvania
Yale University
Columbia University
Princeton University
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Stanford University

I did ED w/Upenn, but I was rejected. I did EA w/MIT, was deferred then rejected recently. However, I added more QB schools as RD such as Duke, Swarthmore, Vanderbilt, Dartmouth, Wesleyan (this is a 100% reject since my school forgot to send mid year reports smh).

Anyways I’ve been recently accepted in Swarthmore’s Class of 2021! Woot! And I think it has something to do with my QB essay since I felt it was very thorough with my background! I’m happy and over-the-moon with this acceptance and at this point even if I get rejected from the rest of my schools, I’m still satisfied bc Swarthmore was my #3 choice behind MIT & Upenn lol. I visited it already, and I absolutely LOVE it.

I’m a bit shaky on what I would like to study but I’m gonna give engineering (mechanical) a shot, but I’m considering math/computer science as possible majors. UGH, my mind has changed a billion times on what I would like to study for undergrad, in my HS I haven’t been able to explore many disciplines but I’m sure I want to do something with the healthcare/data type things (like bioinformatics or biomechanics?). Anyways I wish everyone else good luck!

@CougarCatClan Congrats!
