Questbridge College Prep Scholars 2017 Applicant Thread

Thank you @sugarysnow

@HERCULES_HERCULES
Fam I didn’t even know that was offered!!! Whaa? I definitely need the SAT prep, but no. I didn’t get that.

@HERCULES_HERCULES I wish I got the essay coaching, but I didn’t get any of those perks. I only got the conference and the vague nomination for the college visits thing.

has anyone joined their respective conference facebook group yet? or are you all waiting until you rsvp?

@HERCULES_HERCULES and @AlmightySadist. I don’t know about SAT prep but essay coaching seems to be tied to the different excellence awards and those come out later:

“A note about summer program scholarships and Quest for Excellence Awards:
Students who are selected for a full scholarship to college summer programs will be contacted separately by mid-May, and Quest for Excellence Award recipients will be notified by late June.”

I’m not too good at these but thought I might as well provide a little input for future applicants.

Decision: Not Chosen

Objective:

[
] Essays: I would rate all around a 8/10, I worked really hard on perfecting them and making them true to myself

Reflection
[] Strengths: Essays, even though my writing skills are sub-par, I feel like I showed who I truly was through them, and also showed what kind of life I came from.
[
] Weaknesses: Stats, barely any ECs, no major awards, etc.
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I guess I didn’t have much to show for myself really except my essays, other than that idk
[
] Where else were you accepted/rejected: accepted to MOSTEC @ MIT

General Comments: I really thought I had some type of chance for QB, but I guess not. Compared to everyone else on this thread, I’ve learned that I’m not too spectacular in regards to test scores and extracurriculars, even though part of that is due to financial reasons. It’s all good though. The feeling of rejection hasn’t hit yet, but probably will by tomorrow. I’ll try to take what I learned from doing this application and try to improve on it and apply it to future college applications. I’m really hoping that I could get a different result during the College Match, but we’ll see. Congrats to everyone accepted!.

Accepted!

But only for Virtual College Conference and nomination for college visits

@Jtubungbanua Congratulations!! ★~(◡‿◡✿)

[ b]General Comments:

Honestly, my writing was probably the only reason I got in. So, if you don’t think you have good enough grades or scores or extracurriculars or etc., really focus on your writing!

@wypiposuck___ I don’t even have a Facebook to be honest. (-’_’-) I’ll probably check it out though!!

I was in the middle of a conference when I checked the status, didn’t get in :frowning: I’m now officially rejected from all the programs I applied to this year. I’m not sure whether I should try for NCM, I have good grades but my family income/assets aren’t horrible. Congrats to everyone who got in!

I got in! They invited me to the Emory University conference… Don’t know if I’ll go because I live in Florida and it’s pretty far :frowning:

Hey, I haven’t posted on here at all but I’ve been following the conversation so I thought I’d post. Honestly, I don’t know how I didn’t get in…

Decision: Not Chosen

Objective:
[] SAT I (breakdown): 1480 but I got my score after the applications were due
[
] ACT:
[] SAT II: 800 Math 2, 780 Physics
[
] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
[
] AP (place score in parenthesis): Physics 2 (5), Calc AB (5), Computer Science A (4), Statistics (5), Lang (4), and many more but those 5 were what I listed on my application
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[
] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Subjective:
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Robotics Club, Literary Journal (Head Editor), teacher assistant for AP Comp Sci class and I teach the class when the teacher is not there, NHS, local youth orchestra
[
] Job/Work Experience: private tutor for a few students at my school
[] Volunteer/Community service: I do peer tutoring around school, I help prepare food at a local food kitchen, I volunteer for FIRST robotics tournaments in town
[
] Summer Activities: I went to a camp to learn Apple app development and this summer I’m interning at a lab that works with NASA to do some machine learning research and develop machine learning algorithms for a part of the Mars 2020.
[] Essays: 7/10. Gotta admit, these were okay but not great. I wrote about topics that were important to me but I wrote them pretty last minute and I had no one but myself to proofread them. I was just so busy with schoolwork that I never had time
to really work on these.
[
] Teacher Recommendation: Got my 10th grade chemistry teacher to write me one, and I also am the teacher assistant for his AP Computer Science class. I feel like he gave me a really good rec.

Other
[] State (if domestic applicant): Arizona
[
] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Charter college prep school
[
] Ethnicity: Asian American
[] Gender: Female
[
]Income Bracket: 35,000-45,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): my parents and I are immigrants and non-citizens[/li]
Reflection
[] Strengths: very good test scores and extracurriculars and teacher rec
[
] Weaknesses: probably my essays
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected: Looking at it now, I think it’s because I’m not a URM, both of my parents are very educated (mom is a Bachelor’s in chemical engineering but doesn’t work anymore, dad is a PhD), and my essays could be better. Still, I’m a little confused, because I felt like my stats were good…
[
] Where else were you accepted/rejected: got an internship to do some programming for NASA’s Mars 2020 this summer
General Comments: If anyone can help me figure out how to improve my applications, I would be so grateful. I don’t plan to apply to the NCM, but any help on how to improve my app would be so helpful for college apps next school year.

@HappySquirrel I’m sorry to hear that :^( Definitely try for NCM though, there’s still a chance! Also, with NCM, because you applied for College Prep Scholars, you’ll basically only edit your essays to apply, so it’ll be a somewhat easy process.

I got in! A conference at Emory (I am not attending because of LEDA), and a nomination to an all expense visit to college campuses.

@yuiichiiros Your stats are amazing and you should be proud of them!! Honestly, the only reason I could think of why you got rejected is just the essays, which play a crucial role for Questbridge’s programs.

@HelloThereHola Congratulations!! ★~(◡‿◡✿)

Do you know if there’s going to be a facebook page for the 2017 scholars? There was one for last year’s.

@sugarysnow Ahh okay! I felt like that’s what it was. I really need to make sure to put more attention on my essays when I apply to college next school year.
