Questbridge College Prep Scholars 2017 Applicant Thread

@ninodelbay, I agree with @jerrybrown that you sound like you have many amazing qualities and qualifications that stand out. For reasons unknown, Prep Scholar didn’t happen but it is absolutely true that many people make College Match that didn’t make Prep Scholar. Also I’m starting to realize that with Alot of these schools, they have very generous financial aid for low income students (without QuestBridge) if you can just get admitted and your struggles show a lot about your character. That stands out. Try and do a lot of khan academy studying for the SAT and with a little higher score I think you have some great options. And definitely apply to College Match in the fall!

Hey everyone! I commented before about the Notre Dame Leadership Seminar, but now that the College Prep Scholar decision is official I thought my stats could help some of you as a guide or something. I don’t know. Congratulations to everyone who got in! And to those who didn’t, there’s still many opportunities and most of you have amazing scores and will be great candidates for college admissions! Don’t worry too much, things end up working out!

Decision: Accepted (and nominated for the Notre Dame summer program; I’m still waiting for a response from them)

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): n/a
PSAT: 1340? or 1360?
ACT: 30 (24 science, 35 english, 31 reading, 29 math)
SAT II: n/a
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): n/a
AP (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some big award in Venezuela

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Volleyball (all middle school and freshman year)
Choir (8,9,10,11)
Student Government: (10) Culture Repr.
Class President (8,9,10)
Cheer (11)
Debate team (11)
Model United Nations (9,10)
A religious group? I don’t know how to explain it… congregation? idk (8,9,10,11)
French (10)

Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: I’ve volunteered A LOT in Venezuela. it was a big part of my life when I lived there. It was pretty much like an extracurricular activity honestly, I went to a children’s home two days a week for like two years.
Summer Activities: Volunteering…
Essays: 9-10/10. I work pretty good under pressure. I wrote all of them the day before it was due, but loved how they ended. The biographical one was super personal and talked about the struggles of growing up in a third world country, and then how everything changed when I moved by myself last summer. I’m not gonna lie, I have a pretty… peculiar story and I’m sure that caught the attention of QB reps. But honestly, everyone can make a certain aspect of their lives look extremely interesting as long as you put emphasis on the right things. It was also pretty positive, I made sure to never go way over the top with the drama.
About the other essays, the shorter ones, I tried to be as concrete as possible. The ones that were like 100 words, I just went straight to the point, and other ones like the Quest for Excellence (which I don’t know if I got) were kind of cheesy, but again, personal and pretty concrete in giving out clear answers.
Some issues may be my grammar since English isn’t my first language.
Teacher Recommendation: I would like to say 10/10, but there’s no way I can know. She’s my math teacher and I’m taking two of her honors classes. She knows how I struggled to settle in when I moved; and saw how I overcame it and ended up at the top of her classes. She is a sweetheart and was nice enough to write it with just a day of anticipation. She told me it was really good and hoped it would help me get in. Guess it worked

Other
State (if domestic applicant): UT (I’m a resident cause I’m technically American, but I just moved here last September from Venezuela)
School Type: Parochial/Private? I have a scholarship and I wrote that down
Ethnicity: Latin American
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: About <10k. My parents’ income in Venezuela is literally nothing when converted to Dollars. And I had to use the official rate which isn’t even accurate. In reality is something like… 300$, it’s ridiculous. (If you’re not familiar with Venezuela’s economic/political situation, look it up. It’s a complete disaster)
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First-gen? My parents when to college in Venezuela. So I’m a first-gen USA student. Being Venezuelan and American (I have dual citizenship)… I feel like just showing genuine interest. The more honest and transparent you are, the better. It may sound like a cliche, but write from your heart, don’t make yourself look like a victim and show your abilities and capacities in a realistic way. They will appreciate it.

Reflection
Strengths: Venezuelan with double citizenship, living with a host family because my parents wanted me out of the country. Great grades. Showed dedication since young. I guess that sums it up? GENUINE essays. I asked a lot of people about the before sending them, making sure they weren’t too dramatic was fundamental.
Weaknesses: The recommendation letter was super rushed so I didn’t know what to expect. The income thing may have looked impossible, but I guess they did their research or knew about it.
Why you think you were accepted/rejected: See strengths
Where else were you accepted/rejected:
Pomona conference, nominated for free college visits, and nominated for Notre Dame Leadership Seminar.

General Comments:
I really could not be happier. I’m still very anxious cause I don’t know when I’m getting an answer about Notre Dame. I found out about QB and the program over spring break, so I had a week to do everything. And I found out about the NCM after applying to this. It’s amazing. I’m a believer in Providence and this couldn’t be a more perfect example of how things that are meant to be, are.
I’m definitely not going to the Pomona Conference because there’s no way for me to get there. I’m mainly focused on Notre Dame, as I previously said. Still praying.

Hope this may help some of you!!!

@HERCULES_HERCULES no my son wasn’t offered test prep, as he was doing this through a different scholarship

[ b]Objective:**

Accepted As Questbridge Prep Scholar

[ *] SAT I (breakdown): Total 1500. Math: 750. English: 750. Essay: 20/24. My PSATs were 1380 in 10th grade and 1420 in 11th grade.
[ *] ACT: not taking
[ *] SAT II: will take Math 2, Bio E, and Chinese
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.94. Weighted GPA (out of 5.0): 4.66
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 16/454
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): European History (5). I’m taking AP Calculus AB, AP Spanish Language, APUSH, AP Chem, AP English, and APES this year. I’m taking AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP English Lit, AP Spanish Lit, AP Psychology, AP Biology, AP Microeconomics, and AP US Gvt next year. All these I listed on Questbridge for my course loads.
[ ] IB (place score in parenthesis): not at my school
[ ] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none except Top 10 GPA’s in my class this year and Yearbook student of the year? I skipped a grade if that counts.
[ /list][ b]Subjective:

[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Piano for 10 years. I’m gonna finish the National Piano Playing Awards Audition Level 10 this year and get a Diploma next year, NHS for (10,11) (Sophomore Representative), CSF (11), Key Club (9,10,11) (Secretary 11), Tennis (9 and 10 JV. 11 Varsity), Academic Decathlon (9,10,11) (only freshman who tested into the team and highest scorer on my team in 10 and 11. I’m running for captain next year), Yearbook (8, 10) ((Underclassmen Section) Editor and Yearbook student of the year)
[ *] Job/Work Experience: none
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: 33 hours of Key Club (9), 60 hours of NHS (10), 51.5 hours of Key Club (10), 15 hours of NHS (11), 20 hours of Key Club (11). I tutor elementary and high school students math for about 10 hours this year.
[ *] Summer Activities: Haven’t done anything the last 2 summers but this summer I will be taking a film analysis class and art history class at a local college.
[ ] Essays: I don’t think my essays flowed well. I never really liked English and I wrote about weird topics like mentioning my depression last year, an ex-bf and what I learned about life after that, and my favorite movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind hahaha
[ ] Teacher Recommendation: My calculus teacher has written other recommendation letters for me and she described me pretty nicely, saying that I’m the type of student that teachers love to teach. 9 or 10/10 imo
[ /list][ b]Other

[ *] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[ *] Country (if international applicant): USA
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Chinese/Vietnamese
[ *] Gender: F
[ ]Income Bracket: 35000-45000
[ ] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): 2nd gen immigrant, first gen college
[ b]Reflection

[ *] Strengths: I think I have strong academics like test scores and course load. A little disappointed I don’t have 4.0 UW tho.
[ *] Weaknesses: I don’t have major outstanding awards or many high leadership positions. I had to explain that I moved schools junior year so I pretty much lost all opportunities I could’ve had to be president or captain of whatever club at my old school and it’s hard to get positions when you come so late into a school. I don’t have lots of money but my life isn’t horrible. I live with my 2 parents, no tragic deaths or anything.
[ ] Why you think you were accepted/rejected: Not really sure. I literally found out about Questbridge 3 days before the deadline, so my essays weren’t really proofread and didn’t flow well. I was probably accepted for my test scores and I think (?) I showed personality by talking about how peers shaped my insecurities from being too conceited to too insecure, not feeling good enough. I talked about how I liked reading books and analyzing films on my own time. I guess this makes for the sob story because I don’t think colleges wanna hear about what made your life bad but more what makes you you. Whatever bad thing happened to my friend isn’t necessarily me, so I focused on discussing my own interests and how I overcome my struggles. My kinda struggles were pretty generic tho like caring too much about others’ opinions. Maybe Questbridge realizes not everyone is superspecial but I was being real? I discussed my passion for learning but that seems generic.
[ ] Where else were you accepted/rejected: Pomona conference (rly nearby :)), nominated for free college visits

Hey guys, I just joined College Confidential and I’ll go ahead and share my stats in hope of helping out future applicants

Decision: Prep Scholar

Objective:
-SAT I (breakdown): 1450 (670CR+W and 780M 7-Reading 6-Analysis 8-Writing)
-PSAT (breakdown): 1450 (690CR+W and 760M)
-ACT: N/A
-SAT II: Korean(800) Math 1(740) Bio E(680)
-Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
-Weighted GPA: N/A
-Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/435 or top 5%
-AP (place score in parenthesis): World History(4)
-Major Awards: Nothing major really. These are not even awards, but these are what I put as “honors”. I was part of the WMEA All-State Concert Band and PLU All-Northwest Symphonic Band. I placed first at regional solo and ensemble on saxophone solo three straight years and received superior ratings at the state competition my freshman and sophomore year. I also qualified for a state math competition at a local university.

Subjective:
-Extracurriculars: School Environmental Club(10th and 11th), Jazz Band(10th and 11th), Marching Band(10th), NHS(10th and 11th), Wind Ensemble(10th and 11th), School Math Club(10th, 11th, treasurer)
-Job/Work Experience: N/A
-Volunteer/Community service: My family serves a Korean congregation and I devote a significant amount of my time into preparing for Sunday services and Wednesday services. I translate my dad’s sermon from Korean to English for Sunday services and play piano for the church’s worship group every Wednesday and Sunday. I do a lot of events for my school’s environmental club( 2 hours a week). For NHS, I just do the minimum hours required.
-Summer Activities: I took pre-calc over the summer at a local community college and took driver’s ed.
-Essays: I thought it was pretty good. I just kind of wrote about my experiences of immigration and overcoming the cultural shock and language barrier for the long essay question. For the short ones, I wrote about little bits of my life that spoke to me. Probably 9/10 overall.
-Teacher Recommendation: I asked my 10th-grade Biology teacher to write me one. I was one of his favorite students, although I kind of screwed up on the subject test… He is also the advisor for Earth Corps(my school’s environmental club). I’m sure he wrote a great recommendation. 10/10

Other:
-State: WA
-School Type: Large public school
-Ethnicity: Asian-South Korean
-Gender: Male
-Income Bracket: <23,000 for family of 5
-Hooks: First-gen immigrant

Reflection:
-Strengths: Good grades and ok test scores. I thought my essays and teacher recommendation were relatively strong. A dedicated musician. Low-income family
-Weaknesses: Subject test scores could have been better.
-Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I think my ability to adapt to a new environment quickly and take advantage of the resources available to me really helped me. I barely spoke English when I moved here from South Korea in the 6th-grade. But with dedication and perseverance, I got to where I am today as a pretty good student. And I showed those characteristics through my essays by simply writing down myself and trying to paint a picture of myself to the Questbridge people. I guess it worked out well.
-Awards I got: Invitation to Pomona Conference and Nomination for college visits.

General comments:
Overall, I am very excited that I am a prep scholar and hoping that I hear back from any of the summer programs I applied through Questbridge.

Ok. For any of you aspiring to be a college prep scholar, make sure you devote a lot of your time crafting your essay to your own perfection so that you would be proud of your essay when the day comes to submit your application. The whole app is long and requires a lot of work. I think that the essays are the most important out of all the components that go into the application because they allow you to show the readers who you truly are beyond a sheet of numbers. Let your essays speak to the readers how awesome of a human being you are in your own genuine way; I’m sure they will love it. And try to build good relationships with your teachers because that would carry into great rec letters from them. Good luck future prep scholars!

Does everyone get nominated for college visits, and how many of the people that are nominated actually get an offer? Does anyone know?

The college visits are fly-in programs offered by the colleges. Keep an eye on the emails sent by schools for that information. I think most happen in October

Decision:Prep Scholar

Objective:

[ul][] SAT I (breakdown): 1420 (Taken after application so didn’t submit)
[
] ACT: 32 (Taken after application so didn’t submit)
[] SAT II: Math 2 - 690 and Literature - 580

[ul][li] Job/Work Experience: AVID Tutor[/li][] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteer an hour a week at either my elementary or middle school. Has added up to close to 100 hours in the past 3 years.
[] Summer Activities: Have taken summer classes the past two summers at my community college and will continue doing that this summer.
[
] Essays: Procrastinated on essays and short answers so they were straight trash.
Proudest Achievement: 5/10 Wrote about how a girl said yes to going to prom with me in Sophomore year. (What was I thinking?)
Experience that changed my perspective: 6/10 Wrote about how a change in friendship between my crush and I changed my perspective on people. Little bit better but still cringey and poorly written
Changing community: 5/10 Generic stuff about improving crime rate and safety. I did mention the idea of public perception playing a part in improving our community. Still think it was bad. Could be good though so I live in a top 10 worst city in the U.S. lol
Biographical essay: 7/10 I wrote this on the last day. Only reason I think this essay was somewhat okay was that I poured my heart into it for 6 hours. I barely profread it but I thought I gave the admissions officers a glimpse of my life, what has shaped me, and what makes me unique. One downside was that I wasn’t really cohesive. I just wrote event after event while explaining my feelings.
[] Teacher Recommendation: 7/10 Read it. Was a one page generic letter. First two paragraphs were just normal nice things you would say to a student (Of course a bit personalized about me). Rest of the page was just my resume put into paragraph form. Was a bit underwhelming to be perfectly honest. This was my 10th and current English teacher who just transferred to my school last year.
[/ul]Other

[ul][] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant): US
[
] School Type: Public school. It’s a “Middle College” school which allows us to take community college classes at the same time as our high school classes. You have to do an application and interview to get in. It is in a public school district though. The one downside is we don’t have any AP classes so I feel like I look just a bit worst in comparison to other students.
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Vietnamese)
[
] Gender: Male
[]Income Bracket: <20,000
[
] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation, disability (dwarfism)
[/ul]Reflection

[ul][] Strengths: Volunteer and Work experience, GPA (?), PSAT, biographical essay, hook (especially my disability which I went into great detail about in my essay and additional comments)
[
] Weaknesses: SAT II’s, EC’s are a bit weak, Class rank, missing SAT and ACT scores, Short answer questions
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected: I believe I was accepted mostly because I fit their criteria of a low income but academically high achieving student. I demonstrated a challenge that I went through in my essay and how I overcame (overcoming) that challenge. Stats were okay but not the best. EC’s, volunteer work, and work experience made me a bit well-rounded.
[
] Where else were you accepted/rejected: Didn’t apply anywhere else.
[/ul]General Comments: Just like to say that I’m extremely happy that I got into CPS. It’s been a dream of mine to get into a top tier school so I hope to use this a stepping stone to get into CPS. Congrats to everyone else that made it, and I’m so sorry to those that didn’t. Feel free to comment about any part of my application or ask questions. Hoping to go to the Pomona Conference so maybe I’ll see some of you guys there. :’) I’ll be that loser riding around on a scooter.

Question! I got accepted as a college prep school and I got an invitation to a conference and nominated to go to a college visit. But it doest say if I got into a summer college program though. Is this because I didn’t get into one?

@ericson11362 those won’t be announced until May - Most of u are guessing around 16th-23rd based on previous years’ dates. The only people that have heard yet are ones that were nominated for Notre Dame Leadership - they were asked to submit additional materials. But no one has heard from the other programs yet

@kassh4 As someone mentioned, the college visits are probably going to be for those specific colleges that already have formalized ‘fly-in’ programs and it is up to each school as to what to do with the names given to them by QuestBridge. No - not everyone received that paragraph saying “you wre nominated for all expense paid college visits”. I did but I am also a low income minority (Hispanic) and I think that is what helped me get on the list. I din;t think it is because I was a better candidate for Yale than someone else was - lol!

Some WB schools don’t have fly-ins or prepaid visits at all. Others only have fly-in programs for diversity / underrepresented minority. So if you are QB but not super low income, or not an under-represented minority, maybe you don’t fit the purpose of a certain school’s fly in program. . Other fly-in programs include all low income into the mix - so they may take a closer look at each candidate regardless of race. But it really is up to each school what to do with the list they were given for possible ‘all expense paid visits’. To my knowledge, from being in this particular thread for several months, and reading previous threads from QB College prep scholars in previous years, there has not been much posting about who actually did or did not get invited to a campus. I would recommend that you look at all QB schools you’re interested in, Google them individually with the word “fly in program” and see if you can find who offers that. You can always reach out and apply to their fly in program on your own anyway.

@CMKingOfFl @MaybeHarvard2022 There are exceptions. If you do QB match, ED is not allowed at all even if you rank non-binding schools only. If you don’t do QB match, none of these rules will apply to you.

[QB Early Application Policy](QuestBridge | Early Application Policy)

Exceptions to the QuestBridge Early Application Policy

[ul]
[li]Students may apply to any college or university that requires an early application for eligibility to special scholarships or programs, as long as the admissions decision is non-binding.[/li]
[li]Students may apply to their home-state public college or university with a non-binding early application option, as long as applying to QuestBridge does not violate that college’s policies.[/li]
[li]Students may apply to any college or university with a non-binding rolling admission process.[/li][/ul]

If you are considering applying early to a school that does not fall under one of the exceptions listed above, please send an e-mail to questions@questbridge.org for clarification. For questions on our early application policy, please visit AskQB.

Non-Binding Schools: MIT, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale.

@Hamlon so I wouldn’t rank Columbia or Duke, right? I’d do their common app application?

If your curious about when a specific school you’re interested in is doing their free colleg visits, I’d recommend emailing those schools. Also, if they have a “fly in” program, make sure to ask if the free visit correlates with the program. I just emailed Swarthmore, and they have a program in October that’s basically a bunch of free visits for “High achieving” seniors.

@CMKingOfFl I’m pretty sure you have to do both the common app and the Questbridge app once selected as a finalist. Duke and Columbia are ED schools, so you can’t apply to both early.

Directly from QB

Do I need to submit the Common Application to the schools I’m applying to through QuestBridge?

If you are participating in the College Match by ranking colleges, you should not also automatically submit the Common Application to all of the schools you rank. However, if you are selected as a Finalist, you will need to send additional materials to each of the schools you ranked, and some of our partner schools require the Common Application or a supplement as one of these required materials. If that is the case, you will need to submit the Common Application to the schools that require it by the College Match Requirements for Finalists deadline of November 1. For more information on additional materials required from Finalists for each college partner, please go to each college’s Application Requirements page.

Similarly, if you are participating in Questbridge Regular Decision, you may need to fill out the Common Application if you are applying to any of our college partners that require the Common Application in addition to the QuestBridge application. The Common Application as well as all additional materials are due by the individual college’s Regular Decision deadline. For more information on the Regular Decision requirements for each college partner, please go to each college’s Application Requirements page.

@Hamlon Okay Thank You!! You just saved me hours confusion haha

Anyone from South Texas invited to the Pomona conference? Travel and hotel is about $1000 for such a short trip but I believe a road trip would be much more affordable. So, if anyone would like to discuss carpooling or whatever you’d like to call it, please let me know!

Hello!
Congratulations to everyone who got accepted! You all have demonstrated great amounts of excellence and achievement. Too those who were denied. It was a good try. I am on the same boat. However, I am not going to be stopped and would like to collaborate with you all and everyone else to improve my chances in NCM.
This is my application.

Hooks: First Generation, Asian Minority

REFLECTION:
Strengths:
-Teacher recommendation
-Demostrated financial need
-Good academics
-Demonstrated lots of responsibilities
Weaknesses:
-Very little of distinguished awards
-Didn’t register for conference (I may not have had time) or applied to a lot of awards
-Very little extracurricular (I didn’t mention school activities, such as NHS (I didn’t because it was recent and made me seem not committed as I don’t have hours every week)
-Didn’t take advantage of my school’s extracurricular (I don’t participate in sports because I can’t afford it; I was not aware of clubs)
Why you think you were accepted/rejected:

  • I think I got rejected because of my commitment to this program. I didn’t complete many of the conference and awards sections because I either couldn’t attend or ran out of time to complete (I had a week to finish because of my parents restaurant, which opened that month, and the school work)
What other Scholarships will you be applying for:
  • IDK, recommendations? I’m looking at something called the Daniels Fund Scholarship. I hope to reapply to NCM.

@kchen0514 You are very well qualified in many areas so I think you still have a great chance to make College Match Finalist if you can increase your activities / extracurriculars. I was looking at your stats to see where you might have been weak (because 95% looks strong!). Did you submit your PSAT score? That was the only one I had at the time (had not yet taken SAT). But I know they wanted at least that one. You didn’t mention what the score was but judging from your other academics, I am sure it was strong. Did you use up most of the character space in your answers? In other words, were they detailed? See what you can get involved in at school or in the community. I know you are limited on time but if you look closely you will find something. Also, see if any of your groups (library) could let you be a ‘leader’ or Coordinator’ of other volunteers - or anything like that, to show that you have some leadership. You have a great amount of positives already so those are my only thoughts. Best wishes in College Match!
