Is the college conference based on location?
@sudania, thanks for replying. I did include the exact amount of medical expenses my family incurred - which is also listed in our 2017 tax return. I did explain about my brother’s ongoing medical/therapeutic interventions (lifetime), and the fact my mom underwent life-saving breast cancer treatments from 2016 through 2017. My family has also experienced other extenuating circumstances that I talked about in my application.
I really think QuestBridge considers the income portion first and foremost, placing those ‘high income’ applicants in a different pile. I can’t say this is what happens for sure, since I’m not privy to the selection process. It’s just my gut feeling that they would first consider applicants with income figures below the required threshold. If QuestBridge received thousands of applications that ended up in the “Under 65K” pile, then they would not need to look at any of the detail sections of applications from candidates that are ‘well off’ - since those ended up in the “Over 65K” pile to begin with. As I said, in my case, after all the medical expenses, our family’s income is below the 65K threshold. However, if they had a lot of qualified candidates that listed income below 65K right off the bat, then it would make sense they would look at those first.
I’m sorry you didn’t get CPS. I do hope you will not let this deter you from future opportunities either.
@aatd2 thanks for the words of encouragement, and congratulations on being selected as a CPS!
Do you have to be selected as a CPS to be evaluated for the summer programs?
I was accepted but what did you guys get as part of the acceptance? I got an invitation to go to the conference and a nomination for all-expense-paid campus visits but I was wondering if anyone got the essay tutoring help thing?
@aatd2 Thank you!
What is Quest for Excellence Award (QEA) ? Is it different from CPS or does it require a separate app? I never heard of QEA until I read it from this forum. My acceptance letter for CPS didn’t mention QEA so can I assume I am not being considered for that award? Thanks…
@Hanting1929 The QEA was in the CPS app but optional. I believed it required a couple of additional essays just like applying for the summer programs. If I’m not mistaken, there were a few awards in the QEA like the USA, STEM, Arts, and New American Award. You had to write separate essays specific to the award to apply.
@aatd2 thanks for the info. I just found out I wrote an essay for USA and left the rest blank.
How do we know if we won any Quest of Excellence awards?
“Quest for Excellence Award recipients will be notified by late June.”
Hmm… I checked my update again and at the bottom it does say late june LOL I have no idea how I missed that
Thank you!! @janisary
Also, on a side note, does anyone know what the chance of someone getting a Quest of Excellence Award if they got CPS?
I think its like 2 per state and so that about 100 out of 3000 applicants, and it depends on each state. For the other awards, I believe it’s a lower chance.
Did anyone else sign up for the Pioneer Research Program through the New Americans and USA Award? Are we being notified Early May? or Late May? Or mid May? I remember reading something about it saying the scholarship recipients are notified early May but I also read Late May!!! Kill me lol
Is it true that people were already notified about Pioneers? I was really hoping I could do some economics research it seemed so cool and fun!
Yeah. People already got notified if they are going on to the next round for Pioneers. They got an email, did more essays, and a phone interview.
@sudania yes I did. In fact I wrote an entire response to you yesterday. However, it was taken down by CC. Something about it being “flagged for moderation”. I have no idea what I wrote that could have been offensive in any way whatsoever.
To return to your question, yes I did add the exact amount of medical expenses my family incurred in 2017, as well as, other extenuating circumstances that affect our income in an ongoing basis. Our family’s medical expenses are actually listed in our tax return, so the amount was given to the penny. This amount is so high that it actually put my family’s income below the 65K threshold. Also, spoke about the nature of the medical expenses and the other extenuating circumstance in the additional information areas of the application.
I’m sorry you didn’t get selected for CPS either. I do hope this will not deter you from applying to other future opportunities. I wish you the best in your college search journey.
@bbttnn I do believe that in order to be considered to the various summer programs via the “all expenses paid” path that QB offers, you had to be selected as a CPS. I wasn’t selected as a finalist either. The one thing I was mostly looking forward to was the Pioneer program because this would have helped me tremendously with the senior project required at my high school. My family and I can’t afford the cost of this program at this time.
Other posters might tell you to apply to those summer programs directly to see if they will accept you. However, even if their application(s) deadline has not already come and gone, most of the scholarship opportunities offered directly by those summer programs had deadlines that already passed. Regardless, do look for local opportunities too. You never know what might be available near you.
Hey Everyone! Kinda late here but I also got accepted! I also got notified about the Pioneer Program and hopefully they’ll get back to us within the next two weeks. Anyone else going to the Stanford Conference?? Let’s link up!
