Hello,
I just wanted to know how hard is it to get into the college prep scholarship. Is it just as hard as the actual Questbridge program? I applying this year and wanted to know my chances.
Thanks!

I’m also applying. It’s strange that there aren’t many posts concerning this scholarship seeing how it’s been rumored that an average of 4000 people apply each year…

Hi confused95 and chaskins! I am a College Prep Scholar and a College Match Finalist for 2011. I’m not sure about the specific percentage of those who became College Prep Scholars but I think that if both of you seem fit for this scholarship and what it stands for (high-achieving low income students) then please give it a shot! Don’t ever let statistics discourage you, especially as low income students. Through my experience with QuestBridge I have learned, most importantly, that life gives you very many opportunities-- take them.

This is one of your opportunities. Pour your soul out into those essays, remind those teachers of the upcoming deadline, and keep a positive attitude. If you do so, I think you have a very good chance at this scholarship. And if you ultimately don’t get it, you still took advantage of a wonderful opportunity.

I’d say getting the summer programs or telementoring is much harder than getting matched, but getting campus visits or invited to the conferences is much easier.

Statistics, if you need them:
About 10% of Questbridge Finalists get matched. Or 5% of the total applicants.
More than 40% of College Prep Applicants receive the scholarship.
Less than .66% of them get the summer programs or telementoring.
Around 1% are offered college admission counseling.
Around 35% are offered the college conference trip.
5% receive all expense paid college trips to partner schools.
Around 1% are Fein-Fellows, which is an award for Jewish folk.

Atelophobia, Do you mind talking about what you wrote for your personal essay for the college prep application? I have no idea what to write about. :(

Hi Chaskins! I actually don’t remember what I wrote for the personal essay. I think it was either about a Leadership retreat or about my past travels. I would advise that you just keep brainstorming and writing down every idea. You’re a little pressed for time right now since it’s due soon, but you still have time. It can be very intimidating when you’re faced with a prompt and a blank word document and nothing comes to mind. Don’t let that discourage you. Write about anything and everything that relates to the prompt. List significant events in your life or qualities/circumstances that make you unique. From there, you’ll be able to pick out a strong topic and develop a strong essay.

I realize seems vague but really, just write about what makes you…you. If you’d like more help, QB Scholars are offering to help read essays. I’ve posted a link to the Facebook group in another post in the QB forum.

Good luck!

under what plan/psat and under what gpa should students not apply QB Prep Scholarship? Minimums?
thanks

I’d honestly encourage anyone who qualifies to apply for College Prep. Scores don’t matter much at all. GPA does more so, but still not as significant as essays and recommendations.

I know people who’ve gotten in with [literal] average scores and low- GPA’s. Everyone should apply. Seriously. There are no minimums. :)

So your income HAS to be below $60K? I know a lot of scholarships and things say that, but if someone is qualified, they may consider those people despite; I’m wondering if this is one of those.

QuestBridge says “Most College Match scholarship recipients come from households earning less than $60,000 annually (for a typical family of four) and have experienced long-term economic hardship.”

The $60,000 number is just a guideline; your family may not be “typical.” Here’s the financial requirements page: [Selection Criteria](QuestBridge)

Good luck!

I know few people from my school whose income is way above $60,000 and got college prep. You should definitely apply!
Actually visiting schools can really help you decide what you’re looking for in a college and what college you want to go to. Questbridge is a wonderful program.
I wish you best of luck!

I don’t know if this is the right thread to post this but do you guys or girls know what is the essay prompt for the Questbridge College Prep Scholarship?

check out questbridge.org for more information on the application.

There’s no minimum for QB at all. My test scores sucked. I chose not to list them, and I got the scholarship. Just make your essays interesting and it helps if you have an interesting life. Get really personal. They love that.

Well I got the college prep scholarship.

what was the essay prompt? and does it change every year?

hi oddkid26, I applied for the College Prep Scholarship this year, how do you find out if you get the scholarship nor not?
An email will be sent out, hopefully this week, notifying you to check your qb account for the decision. Good luck!
