Question about ACT and SAT

My son took the ACT last month and scored a 33 and an 11 on the essay. He took the SAT today and felt like he bombed it. He did not send any scores to any colleges as he is only a Junior and doesn't know where he wants to apply. If later he chooses to send only his ACT score with his applications, do the colleges see his SAT score? Do they know he has taken the SAT? And, if he takes the SAT more than once, do they get to see all his SAT scores, or only the score he sends them. Thanks!

If your son never submits the SAT scores the schools will never know the scores. If he only submits the ACT, they will only see the ACT. HOWEVER....check to see if your son's high school puts the SAT scores on the transcript. It would be an "unofficial score" but nevertheless there. You can ask them to remove it. Re: sending SAT scores...The college board sends scores from ALL high school sittings of the SAT when you send your scores. You cannot pick and choose. However, most schools look at only the highest score. Also...take heart...it's a LONG test and everyone I know has walked out of it feeling they did horribly. Wait and see what his scores really are...he has plenty of time to take it again in the spring and even again in the fall of senior year.

With the ACT, you can pick and choose on sending scores. With The SAT, if you want any scores sent, all the scores will be sent. Those are very good ACT scores. Feel good about that and don't worry about SAT scores yet.

Hijack here, please accept my apology. Is the writing portion of the ACT scored separately and not included in the composite?

That's correct, from the ACT website:
[quote]
Your Composite Score and each Test Score (English, Math, Reading, Science) range from 1 (low) to 36 (high). The Composite Score is the average of your four Test Scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. Taking the Writing Test does not affect your subject area scores or your Composite score.

Do any of the colleges to which your son might apply require SAT II (aka SAT Subject Test) scores of applicants who also submit the ACT?

If any of them do, those colleges will also see your son's SAT score, since the College Board sends ALL scores if you request that they send any of them.

Your son has until Wednesday to cancel his SAT scores. He might want to consider it.
