First off, WOW the new CC look is great ... it's a definite refresher from the old look ... Ok back to what I Was supposed to talk about (I'm a little excited for my freshman year ... so here it goes)

** Chem **
For CoE, I entered with a 5 on AP Chem ... that fulfills the Chem 1XX classes, right? But would I be required to take Chem 210/211 in order to graduate from CoE or is that it in terms of the chem stuff?

** Phys **
Also originally I went into orientation not knowing my AP Physics score, so my advisor told me to sign up for Physics 140. I got my Physics score back, and I have 5s on both Mech and E/M, which means that I'm out of Physics 140/141/240/241. With this change, should I just change my WA classes on-line right now or do I need to talk it over with my advisor? I e-mailed my advisor, but it's been 3 days now and he still hasn't e-mailed me back.

** Math **
The coursebook says that they only require Math 1XX and 215/216 (if I recall correctly). Would Math 285 (Honors Calc III), which they placed me into, satisfy the Math 215 requirement since it's a honors math class equivalent? (probably the dumbest and silliest of all 3 questions)

^I’m going for either aero/math or comp sci/math and I’m beginning to favor comp sci more.

I thought that the first year engin hand book sa
id that Chem was one of the requirements … I don’t have it now because I’m trying to find it.

EDIT: Found it! It says 130/125/126 or 210/211 … that confuses me. If I have AP credits for 130/125/126 … does that mean I have to take 210/211 or am I liberated from taking any more Chem with my AP credits?

For Chemistry, you do not need to take any more chemistry (if you are sure that it completes the lab requirements for 130). I made sure of this with my advisor (although…I am an IB student, however the requirements should be the same)

As for math, the honors equivalent are the same - why else would the advisors recommended applied calc courses for students… :P

For chem, unless your major requires chem 210, you don’t need to take any further chemistry if you got a 5 on chem ap. You also don’t need to take any physics if you got a 5 on both physics ap tests so change it on wolverine access to w.e you want. You don’t need your advisor’s OK. And yes, the math honors is equivalent to normal math.

but what should I do about the Physics 140 if I got a 5 on both APs … should I just change my schedule right now on WA or do/should I need to talk to my advisor about what class I should replace Phys 140 with?

Well it depends. Do you have an idea of what you want to major in or what you want to take? If not talk to your advisor. If you have an idea just change it on WA.

You could take Physics 340 if you’re looking for another Physics class since you also dont have to take 240 (lucky)

^Not sure yet. I’m fine without Physics, because I’m not truly passionate about it and it’s never been one of my strongest suits. (Chem, Computers, and Math are) 210/211 is not required for Aero or Comp Sci, based on what I just looked up. I’m leaning towards Comp Sci b/c I like it and it seems like a better fit for me, even though Aero (airplanes) is something I’m interested in too, but I lack experience in.

One thing I’m worried about is that if I change classes my schedule won’t work and I may need to change my ENGIN 100 class, which they said not to because there’s the possibly of swapping/dropping the class you’ll lose the slot or something like that. I remember my advisor telling me that.

As for ideas for what to do with the empty slot, I’m really not sure. Maybe it would be a good idea for me to start the humanities sequence (an econ class maybe but I haven’t heard many good things about UG econ @ Michigan … experience not reputation per se) I have AP credits for Econ (101 and 102 as departmental), which means that I would enroll in Econ 101/102, and I’m scared to take it because the classes will be huge.

You can change your entire schedule (except for the ENGR 100 class) without telling your advisor. However, it would be nice to tell your advisor about your AP credit in Physics, just to keep them informed. So, you could replace Physics for anything else, as long as ENGR 100 stays the same.

Finishing off the humanities/social science requirement is a good idea, you always can take a 300 level class and finish off two requirements: one 300 class in HU/SS and a series within a subject field (i.e. English, PolSci, etc.).

I ended up talking with my advisor — he said that he forgot to reply to my e-mail and so he called me up to apologize and to discuss what I could do. He said that Mat Sci 220 was good for me (but I don’t like the idea so I ditched it … i’m leaning more on comp sci b/c it fits me alot better than aero), EECS 203 (he said it would help with comp sci and it’d be a good class since I’m strong in math), and Econ 101/102.

I ended up choosing to start my humanities sequence (econ) and I’m starting with Econ 101 next semester with Gerson, then following the sequence 101 -> 102 -> 401 -> 402. What do you guys think (btw is Gerson any good?)

About the EECS 203 … why did my advisor tell me to choose this class? Wouldn’t EECS 182 be better since it does intro programming … Python … it seems interesting and the grading doesn’t seem too harsh. Wouldn’t it be better if I did EECS 182 –> 203 (Discrete Math)?

I think you have humanities mixed up with social science. Economics is a social science, and thus does not fill up the 6 credits humanities (English, philosophy, religion, etc.) requirement for engineers.

Also, I’m pretty sure EECS 182 is equivalent to ENGR 101, so you can’t get credit for both of them…Meanwhile, EECS 203 is more math-based class that has programming implications (from what I read on Wikipedia and the course catalog). For EECS 203, you only need Calc I as a prerequisite and it is a required course for Comp Sci or Comp Eng majors; so you could have gotten a head start on your major requirements, and thus why your advisor recommended it to you.

aaack … there’s a 6 credit humanities requirement? I have 6 credits of departmental English credit … both show up as ENGLISH 101X … would that count or would I have to take an English class? (ENGLISH 124/125)

If I’m set for humanities, I’ll for sure take ECON 101 for the SS sequence.

Out of all the humanities classes (Philosophy, Poly Sci, English, etc) which one would give the lightest workload? (I don’t want to be overwhelmed 1st sem)

And I thought English 124/125 was only an requirement for LS&A.

ECON 101 taught by Janet Gerson (class size = 306)
ENGR 100-300 taught by Pauline Khan and Andrew Yagle (class size = 56)
MATH 285 taught by Tatiana Howard (class size = 28) with options to downgrade to 255 Total credits = 12 + UROP <– Playing safe

Is my schedule manageable? If you guys have had these profs, how are they like?

Would the following classes be better than ECON 101? I chose ECON 101 so that I can have ECON open as an option if I end up wanting to transfer into Econ, because it is something that I still like.

Bookmarked SS alternatives to ECON 101:
–> POLSCI 111 (class size = ~300)

Bookmarked HU alternatives (sub SS):
–> ENGLISH 124/125 (class size = 18)
–> PHIL 180

I think that schedule should be manageable. My roomamate took ENGR 100, Math 116, UROP and Physics 140 his first semester and he was quite busy most of the time. UROP takes up a lot of time, depending on the type of research you’re involved in. Stick to Econ 101 since it might be something you’d be interested in. If not, you might have to take it anyway to fulfill your gen ed distribution requirements.

Thanks for the advice! I will be staying with ECON 101, and I will be deferring my HU class until my 2nd year or whenever I wrap up my SS sequence (I’ll probably do ECON 101 –> 102 –> 401 b/c I need a 300±level class)
