Question about AP English Lang and Composition

missypie: Does the teacher actually meet with the students that come to see him and review their papers and is he available when he says he will be? Are his review hours so limited as to be of no use or is he there most mornings, during lunch and a few days after school? If so, I don’t know if he is shirking. If he is not actually available or turns students away, then he should not be teaching this class.

My son’s AP classes requried a lot of writing, which were usually graded 1-5 in accordance with the anticipated grading scale on the AP test. Generally, these were short essay responses, not lengthy papers. Not a lot of individual feedback, but the teacher spent class time explaining how the DBQs and other responses should be structured. The teachers seemed to think that more writing was better.

Does anyone know of a book to help learn the course material? I know there are AP test prep books, but it’s not really the same as a text to learn what some teachers are failing to teach…

The best teacher my older son had required them to keep writing the first essay until the grade improved. My sons went from 60 to 95 in three drafts. After just a couple of essays he learned how to get top scores on the first draft he turned in.
