Hello Everybody

I am currently applying to the Cornell School of Arts, and Sciences, and have this question. I am trying to write my supplemental essay however I don't know for sure yet whether I will study economics, mathematics, or history( those are my top interests) so should I write about all of them, or just choose one and go with it.

Hey there,

Last year, I was in a similar situation that you are in right now. I applied to A&S and wrote my essay (if I remember correctly), about chem, psych, and econ, or something like that. It seemed to work for me in that particular instance, and certainly isn’t a bad idea. Cornell, especially in A&S, is founded upon the idea of any person, any study. They would love to know that you have diverse interests and plan to explore different areas of study. If you do get accepted and matriculate, you most likely aren’t going to just pick a major and go with it. It will also show that your interests are diverse enough that you will likely be successful in/enjoy completing all of the distribution requirements in A&S. That said, what worked for me might not necessarily be the best for you, but it sounds like you’re mostly undecided, and that’s definitely okay to convey in your essay.

Don’t worry that you do not know what you want to major in exactly. That is the beauty of CAS. In fact, they encourage you to come in undeclared. It’s important to convey in your essay why you believe that CAS, in particular, offers the best fit for your interests and abilities. The reason you have to fulfill so many breadth and distribution classes is to encourage you to dabble in subjects you would not have otherwise.

I’m applying to Cornell CAS as well and I wrote about my interests in anthropology and chemistry and the people that have read over it (including 1 alum from Cornell) thought it was all right. I think CAS is really looking for diversity in terms of what you want to study and besides, it makes you a more interesting person than to be “that guy” who takes the one track biology-premed road.

The combination of your courses is very interesting.

Thanks for all of the replies, any tips on the essay as to how incorporate those two elements into my essay?
