Question about athletic pull

how much pull do the coaches have, I am being recruited to play a varsity sport at Wash U, have applied early decision, and had my application supported by the coaches at the university. My recs are also very good, and my scores are on par with the 25th percentile that are admitted to the school.

I’m in the same situation as you. I was told I got a “gold star” on my application. My guess is that their pull is not that strong but definitely helps a bit.

What sport are you planning on playing?

I’m a recruited athlete as well for softball! What sport are you guys for?

@hsvipers men’s soccer. Did the softball coach have any pull in admissions?

im recruited to play baseball

@spens1095 she has some pull, but obviously not too much. I’m a legacy as well though, but I just want my decision!

@herzy4life BaseballEh is also a baseball recruit! (idk if you’ve seen his posts, but he’s been posting in the ED thread)

@spens1095, Joe Clarke has promised applicants that they’ll get in, only to see some of them get rejected - so obviously it’s not a sure thing. But at least if you do get in, he’ll treat you well.

@RyanMK Clarke never guaranteed that I would be accepted but had promised that “golden star.” From what I hear, he has a large recruiting class knowing that many will not get in, and if it so happens that 10+ of his recruits are admitted in a single year then he will have a JV program. Are you looking at playing there?

Well, I’m a sophomore, and I never went out for varsity - I didn’t want to commit that much time - so I stuck with club. The club team happens to consist of 75% ex-varisty or rejected players, so I’ve heard some things. There used to be a JV team, but so many players quit and joined club that they simply didn’t have enough players for both JV and Varsity. Works fine for the club team though - 3rd/4th in the nation is good with me :)

Which sports’ coaches have the biggest pull? Basketball? Has anyone received a “likely” from the athletic liaison? Does Wash U have an athletic liaison like the Ivy League schools do?

@4gr8years I don’t believe so. When I was on a recruiting trip to Cornell, I met with an athletic liaison who basically guaranteed that she would get me admitted into Cornell if the coaches wanted me in the program.

Same with me spens1095, when I went to Dartmouth they said all I needed was a 3.0 GPA and 1800 sat and I was in… Not exactly the case with WashU haha

Did you guys get accepted??

How good is WashU varsity soccer?

They’re usually top 25 - get a round or two deep in the postseason each year.

What grade are you in Ryan? Are you a Pre-med?

I’m a sophomore, and I’m not sure if I want to go to med school or not. Therefore, I am taking all the pre-med requirements, so that option remains open if I wish to take it.

Oh sounds good. Hopefully I will see you next year? Do u thoroughly enjoy washU? Where did you go to Highschool? Also, how does club soccer work? Do u travel? It was interesting that they rank club teams

Athletic pull definitely plays a part in admissions. I have been recruited for track & field. I got accepted, as well. I feel that the coach’s support certainly helped out a bit. Obviously, grades and SAT scores were most important. But just for anyone going RD, definitely talk to a coach if you feel that you can be recruited.
