I have been in concert band for 3 years of high school now (6 yrs counting middle school) and have given up standing in rank, etc. to do it. I've also sacrificed some AP and honors classes I wanted to take so I could stay devoted to band. However, next year there is not enough space in my schedule to take band and all the classes I really want to take. Plus, recently I've been enjoying band much less and I long ago realized I will not be pursuing a major or career in anything music related. My question: Should I stick it out one more year to prove a strong four year committment (both to myself and colleges) or should I give it up to do things I want to do more? Also, how much worse does a 3 yr committment to something look than a 4 year? thx

3yrs is good, but if electives gets in your way of regular academics, then academics is first, IMO.

I think you'd be all right if you dropped it. I dropped band this year (after staying in band for 7 years); it hasn't hurt me. Make sure that colleges recognize your previous commitment to music if you do drop it. If you still like band but want to take other classes instead, band as an ec could be an option (marching band, jazz band, etc.). :)
