Hey guys,

Can non-senior students do their internships there?
To anyone who went there - What's it like? Do you need to have a lot of background knowledge and be really knowledgeable in your internship topic?

I’m not sure about the Broad Institute - why don’t you call them and ask. They are not a MIT academic department - it’s a loose connection to MIT.

However, there are lots of opportunity to participate in research (for pay or credit) at MIT. I am a first semester freshman and I have a UROP for pay ([MIT Media Lab - ThePlaz.com](MIT Media Lab - ThePlaz.com)) However, I don’t know if that is also true in the bio fields. Here is the link to the posted openings -http://web.mit.edu/urop/research/openings.html - however most faculty and grad students are always looking for more hands (this is a real strength of MIT - there are so many opportunities for so few students) You just have to ask them if they need any help.

A friend of mine worked in the Broad first term of sophomore year. I myself worked in the Whitehead Institute summer after freshman year. While previous lab work is definitely a plus, it’s possible to find a lab without such a background. I knew very little beforehand (I had taken 7.012) and ended up having both a productive and educational summer.

That said, don’t look for the big names - look for the research that interests you. It just so happened with mine that I found a professor doing awesome regeneration research and he happened to be in the Whitehead, and I got incredibly lucky in getting that UROP :D

Wait… now I’m confused. Don’t you have to be in college to do UROP?

And PiperXP, you took 7.012 while you were in high school? How do you do that?

Nintendo360, are you asking if high school students can work at the Broad? I wouldn’t be surprised if area high schoolers can do research internships at the Broad (they certainly can at Whitehead). You just have to find the right people to contact regarding this.

theplaz and PiperXP were both talking about working at the Broad as MIT students, for which there is definitely no restriction. My senior friend has done her UROP at the Broad since sophomore year.

Indeed, I was talking about college seniors/college students. If the OP meant high school, that’s another story.

Ok, I was talking about high school seniors… sorry. I guess I should’ve made that clear. But I did see some people doing some experiments in teams supervised by a mentor. Indeed, each team had a person from my high school, and I was wondering if anyone other than high school seniors could participate in this study?

On that note, does anyone know any other places where I could do some sort of research/internship in the nanotechnology or bio/chem field? Would researchers at MIT or Harvard be willing to take in a high school student to work with them?

I live in the vicinity of Boston, if that helps.

From my experience, MIT does not take any hs students in any official capacity. If you wanted to volunteer with a professor, they might take you on - but nothing is centralized or official.
