So, from what I hear it's pretty easy to get internships/paid UROPs through MIT once you're a student there.

What are the chances that MIT could help me find an internship or research position this summer, as a prefrosh?

Prefrosh can’t get UROP positions, but I’m not sure if we can get any other work-study’ish things or internships, and I don’t know where to ask. If anyone could help, that would be great!

I would love to do some interesting work, or at least menial labor in Boston, rather than working an average job at home.

I would honestly be very surprised if any MIT students helped you get summer jobs. We’ve all gotten our summer jobs independently, either through networking with people that we know or by applying through the regular channels. I definitely wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending a random prefrosh on the internet for any position that I know of, and independence is a valuable skill. Do this on your own.

You might start with your local MIT alumni association.

If you want to work for an MIT professor for the summer, you should email people whose work sounds interesting.

Many professors pay UROPs out of their own funds (not from the UROP money), and they won’t really care whether you’re a prefrosh or a freshman.
