Question about Changing Majors within College of Engineering

Hi,

I am having some anxiety about how possible it is to change majors at Boston University. I would appreciate any insight in how easy it is to change majors within the College of Engineering, and what factors it is contingent on.

Initially I had thought that I would major in Computer Engineering, so I selected it as my “School or College or program of application” in the Common Application Supplement.

However, recently I’ve been greatly interested in Biomedical Engineering, and actually regret not selecting it as my major when I was writing my application.

The article from the BU website: Can I Change My Major? Center for Career Development | Boston University says that changing majors is possible, but mentions the possibility of enrolling for another semester. Under what specific conditions would you have to do this?

Also, according to the explanation, it should be “fairly easy” if you’re a freshman or sophomore. On the other hand, the Biomedical Engineering department is ranked 7th in the entire nation so I know that it must be extremely competitive - in this case is it a doomed prospect to try and change majors into BME? Is it a guarantee, is the likelihood still high, or low?

Is this something I can change immediately by contacting BU, right at this moment, or do I have to enroll and begin classes as a freshman before I can initiate any change?

Thanks to anyone who can shed light on this, I appreciate it a lot.

You don’t declare your major in engineering until end of sophomore year so don’t worry about it.

ENG students get a flowchart with a list of courses to take, and there are a few differences among the majors (BME with pre-med intentions can’t skip Chem I + II).

You can come in as undeclared with the college of engineering but you will be taking the same courses as most freshmen if you don’t have credit

(ENG modules, Physics I, Calc, etc.) Some courses have tests with low averages, but then again, there are hundreds of kids so that’s to be expected.

As for the competition, people help each other out with studying so I don’t find any intense competition among friends… but you will have to definitely study to keep up with the material

Ok, that’s a big relief. I’m asking the EHost person to verify, and am planning on calling the College of Engineering office on Monday.

Thanks very much for your time sir.
