Question About Chem 1A/Telebears Phase II

What is the difference between Chem 1A and Chem 1AL? Right now I have Chem 1AL LEC and Chem 1AL Lab on my schedule but that is only one unit. Do I sign up for the actual Chem 1A lecture (Ex. CHEMISTRY 1A P 001 LEC) during telebears phase II?

Thanks for helping!

Chem 1A is now two separate classes you will need to register for. Chem 1A, which is the classthat teaches you chemistry, has a lecture section taught by the professors. Chem 1AL is the other class, the one that covers the lab work - it consists of a lecture where someone talks through technique, expectations and process for the lab experiments you will do, and a lab section where you will perform those experiments.

Usually you sign up for both at the same time (Chem 1A and Chem 1AL) as I doubt you will be successful if you are only in 1AL, and you might get bounced out of the class by the department. If you have the ability to log in during open hours, before July 14th when Phase II starts, I would highly, highly recommend getting registered in Chem 1A now.

Is it possible to take a R2B course as a freshman? The R2B course does list R2A as a prerequisite but the course also shows up on the list of classes fulfilling the R1B requirement.

Thanks!

Yes, you can take any of those courses which show up in the search to fulfill the RC requirement.

The requirement is for three classes for reading/writing competency - entry level writing, R&C A, and R&C B.

You can get a waiver for some part of this depending upon standard testing (SAT/ACT) scores, AP English scores, and the AWPE test you took as an incoming freshman if you hadn’t already waived entry level writing.

Each course is a pre-req for the next course in that sequence, but if you waived a course that waiver satisfies the pre-req for the next one. Thus if you were waived from the need to take entry writing, you meet the pre-req to take any R&C A course. If you waived or completed R&C A, you meet the pre-req to take any R&C B course.

For either of the two levels, R&C A or R&C B, you can take ANY course with the same suffix, the ‘number’ (1, 2 or 5), the department and the topic do not have to match.

In other words, if you take R5A from the German department that meets the R&C A requirement and you could take R2B from any department, any R5B or any R1B, all will cover the R&C B requirement.

OP - have you taken an R&C A course yet, or had the need waived? If so, yes you can take R2B or any R&C B course as a freshman. If not, then you should take the R&C A class first before registering for an R&C B level class.

Speaking of Chem 1A, the course description notes that there are three hours of lecture and one hour of discussion per week, but only the lecture shows up on the Berkeley course catalog; how do enroll in lecture? During phase one, I was unable to enroll in Chem 1AL (the site said something about the necessity of enrolling in the course…I forgot specifically what it said) and perhaps this is problem. Currently, I am enrolled in Chem1A lecture, and looking to enroll in lab. :l

I think you must be enrolled in lecture in order to be enrolled in the lab.

^ Not actually, I enrolled in Chem 1AL only during Phase I

if you haven’t passed it in prior semesters or are not simultaneously in the class, you may find yourself dumped out of the class at any moment as those are the conditions. In high demand classes with many waiting students, the departments can be aggressive about hunting down people who don’t meet prereqs
