Question about cumulative GPA discrepancy?

Over the summer break I checked my GPA and realized my GPA was higher than before summer.

I contacted someone from the administration and they told me it was possible that they calculated one of my repeated courses wrong...which made me question how I calculate my own GPA, because I thought their initial calculation was correct.

So let's check the math here.

Let's say I had a D in a class worth 4 credits. That's 4 points. So I retake the class in the summer and I get a C. That's 8 points. Since it's the average of the two I get 6 points for the 4 credit course.
Or am I way, way off?

retaking classes that you previously got a D or lower will have the grade replaced by the grade you get from retaking the class (supposedly it should be higher than what you get first). You do not take the average.

(retaking classes that you get a C or higher is a different story – the grade you get from retaking the class doesn’t count)

That just gave me a completely different GPA.
This is turning out to be a huge RU screw. All right, I’m going to have to schedule an appointment…
