Hello! I applied ED to Williams College, and had sent an email to their coach with my high jump&pole vault heights. I got an email back with all the "recruitable heights/times" for athletes. The high jump recruitable height was 5'00", which I have gotten! How do I know if he is interested/if I'm being recruited? He didn't send an email in which he himself was saying anything to me specifically, just the email with the recruit heights and info about the team. I have also looked at the results of their meets, and their high jumpers seemed to mostly get 4'9" or 4'11", although one's PR was 5'3"... (mine is 5'00 but it was my first season of track and I was able to get that height consistently by the middle/end of the season- plus I know I will get higher this year)!

Most of the other colleges that I'm being recruited for had me do an overnight with the team, but I unfortunately didn't realize I loved Williams until late October. Maybe it was too late in the year for an overnight? :/

Em, if you love Williams, send the coach an email and see what unfolds. He may not have made the connection between your ED application and the fact that you would be a good addition to the track team. You’ve had no contact with him prior to this “fishing expedition” email? This could work out very nicely!

Well I emailed him once about my heights and how I would love to be a part of the team, but I didn’t hear back, so about 3 weeks later I sent him an email confirming that he had received my previous one. That was when he sent me the recruitable heights… I then said something along the lines of, “I’m excited to see that I have met the recruitable height for high jump, I did ED to the school and would love to be on the team,” but since then have not heard back. :/

Em, do you have a list of meet results showing your jumps? Put something together and include your HS coach’s email and phone number. Call your HS coach and let him know you are contacting Williams one more time with specifics about your jump history. Do it today :)

Not at all, Em. The fact that you’ve applied ED, and that you’ve met his jump recruiting threshold are very significant. Not sure why he’s not replying enthusiastically. That’s why I’d encourage you to write a very clear email about your wish to jump for Williams, and dates and meets where you jumped over 5’, and either a link to a website showing your results, or your coach’s phone number so he can easily verify what you’re saying.

I guess a pessimist might say he’s already got a recruited jumper, but he’d be crazy not to encourage you too, since you clearly already want to go there. You’re essentially a walk-on, but if I were you, I’d want him to go to admissions on your behalf and let them know you are someone he wants.

Just sent the email! I hope he’s interested, because I think it will be tough for me to get in there without someone having athletic interest in me…!
