Question about driving in Canada.

I would like to drive a car at McGill, and I was speaking with my mother and she was feeding me some tale about how I can't drive in Canada if I am not a Canadian citizen.

Seems pretty farfetched to me.

However, is there anything special I need to be able to drive in Montreal?
Also, where do people park if they are in rez? Do rez's have parking lots or parking garages?

1) your mom's tale is indeed farfetched. As long as you have a legit US license, Canadian policy will honor your ability to drive (hell I think they honor all licenses, because I'm sure my turkish friend's parents are driving here sans a N. American license).

You can get a parking permit for any rez, I know upper rez has a few places to park (the lot isn't always full here), as does New Rez (under it). For the most part, I don't really suggest you bring a car, as it'll just provide you with needless expenses (in terms of gas and insurance). You don't really need a car in Mtl, the public transportation is amazing enough.

Just to drive, you don't need that much. If you're staying more than 6 months, you'll probably need an international driving permit. You'll have to check with your insurance for the rest I guess. But yeah, a car as a student at McGill is more hassle than anything else. E.g. you're going to need winter tires. As of November (I think) it's the law, I don't know about cars registered in other provinces/states, but you'd be crazy not to have them anyway...

There is really no need to drive in Montreal. Most things are within walking distance from the downtown campus and otherwise, there's always the public transportation system as drmambo said.

Unless you plan to live far away from campus, leave your car at home!

I agree, the transpotation here in Montreal is great (e.g subways etc) . There is no need to drive.

ditto what everyone else said. Where would you be going with a car? The only thing I can think of is to go skiing but they have direct buses to the mountains too. The bike trails are so sweet.

The only places that you might want to go with your car in Montreal are maybe the out of the way places like the West Island or the East End.

driving is crazy in downtown montreal... and the public transportation system is amazing. There's virtually no need for a car. Don't bring it unless you plan to go home all the time or something.
