Im from the States and I attend a Canadian university. Im a dual citizen and my mother lives in Ontario. I have a car (from the States) that Id like to bring up. I know I can keep coming back every 60 days but I live in Florida so when I "go home" im usually going to my moms home in Ontario. Basically, I want to know if theres any kind of loophole that will allow me to bring my car to Canada permanatly without paying the 15% tariff. Thanks alot.

I have several American friends who had "lived" as visitors in Canada and taken their cars, as long as you are still a US resident I don't think you have to change your car registration. On the other hand, I also had a friend wose son wet to university in Canada and he was allowed to register his car there, with the intent of bringing it back at the end, therefor he did not have to switch over the miles to kilometres or anything like that, but he was registered and had insurance in Canada. You might check with your insurance company and make sure you are covered, they can issue you a special proof of insurancer card.

I think as long as you don't confuse them at the border by giving way too much inof, you say you are a US resident, from FL and you are attending schooll in Canada and your car is coming with you. The only complication is the dual citizenship, do you need a student visa? Since you are dual they may not consider you a visitor, but they don't want people to just become residents and get eligibility for the health care, etc., so it is probably not that easy to become a Canadian resident:)

It depends on your meaning of permanently....are you going to take the car back to the US when you go? Are you staying a FL resident? Are you going to sell the car in the US when you are done? If so, you're probably fine, if not, then you may need to determine whether it is worth switching that car to metric and all.

yeah theres alot of other issues here. I have an ontario license and my university address is canadian (cheaper tuition obviously). I guess ill give my insurance company a shout. thanks though ,anymore info would be appreciated.

is the car leased or outright owned...

its owned and its listed under my father's name who is a non-dual US citizen in florida. I figure I have to first get by Canada Customs before I can contact my insurance company.
