<p>I'm applying as a Fall '12 transfer (sophomore). I took 4 courses in the Fall, and I'm enrolled in 4 as of now. However, I'm considering dropping one of the courses I'm enrolled in. Additionally, I have 5 AP credits that transferred in. I'm wondering if dropping a class in now will affect my chances. I'm applying to Columbia, Yale, UChicago, UPenn, and the like. I will take 4-5 classes next semester, as well. Thanks for your help!</p>

<p>The only way AP credit factors into transfer admissions is that they may permit you to take higher level coursework. But they do not act as a replacement for current classes.</p>

<p>I’m a little confused about this, are you talking about summer, next fall? Neither of these would affect your transfer decision, as they are only projections of what you intend to do.</p>
<p>I don’t know exactly how your school works, but for most, a ‘normal’ full time load is 4-5 classes or 15-16 units. </p>
<p>I don’t know your HS record, test scores, or current college, but my guess is that you’re trying to transfer up as a soph to highly selective colleges (2-15% transfer rates). When these schools look at your college record, they will consider all factors: school, rigor of courses, number of units, grades, etc. If you are carrying a less than normal courseload (worse if less than full time), that could definitely have an impact.</p>
<p>Sorry for the lack of detail. I’m a freshman at Northwestern University on the quarter system, so by next semester I meant quarter. 3-4 classes here is considered full-time, while 5 is viewed as an overload. I was wondering if taking 3 this quarter would detriment my chances. I took 4 last quarter quarter and will take 4-5 next quarter. Thanks for your help in advance</p>

<p>If 3 is a normal load, there shouldn’t be a problem dropping the class. You might be able to send an unofficial transcript for wt qt rather than a mid-sem report.</p>
