Question about ED and EA

It is to my understanding that if I apply ED to anywhere, say Duke or Columbia, then I would not be able to apply ED anywhere else. I understand that. But, am I able to apply EA, not SCEA, to say Notre Dame or any other EA college at the same time? How about rolling admissions like U-Mich? So, I was wondering if I could apply to Columbia (ED) and Notre Dame (EA) and U-Mich (Rolling) all at the same time before Nov. 1st.

So is it just one ED and anything else that’s not ED, except SCEA?

No you can't...if you decide to apply to Columbia ED that is the only school you can apply to ED, regardless of what the other schools' policies are. You can apply to as many EA or rolling admissions schools as you want, but once you apply to ONE ED school, that's all you can go for.

Harvard, which offers SCEA, allows you to apply to rolling admissions schools at the same time. You might check the websites of other EA and SCEA programs to see if that's the norm.

Joint Statement for Candidates on Common Ivy Group Admission Procedure

The College Board-approved Early Decision Plan, which is offered by Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton, requires a prior commitment to matriculate; thus a student may not file more than one Early Decision application among these or any other institutions. Financial aid awards for those qualifying for financial assistance will normally be announced in full detail at the same time as the admission decisions. An applicant receiving admission and an adequate financial award under the Early Decision Plan will be required to accept that offer of admission and withdraw all applications to other colleges or
universities. All Ivy institutions will honor any required commitment to matriculate which has been made to another college under this plan.

b. A single-choice Early Action Plan is offered by Harvard and Yale. Admission notice is sent mid-December; financial aid notification is sent at that time or when the file becomes complete. This plan does not require a commitment to matriculate, and students may apply to other colleges at any time under those colleges’ “regular” admission programs (spring notification of final admission decision). Students are urged to consult the specific school’s admission literature for details concerning Harvard’s and Yale’s requirements regarding this plan. Students are urged to consult the admission literature available at each Ivy institution for details concerning its particular December Notification Plan.

in short, if you apply to an ivy early (they either have ED or SCEA), then you can't apply ANYWHERE else early.
