Question About Enrolling in Courses

Hi, I am a high school student who is looking to enroll in a higher level math course (i.e., Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, etc.) through a concurrent enrollment program.

When looking at course schedules however, I am confused between whether or not I have to enroll in both a lecture and a discussion section.

For example, the course schedule for math courses at UCI for Fall 2014 can be found at the following link by selecting "Math" for Department Name and clicking "Display Web Results":

<a href="http://websoc.reg.uci.edu/perl/WebSoc">http://websoc.reg.uci.edu/perl/WebSoc</a></p>

The resulting list for Math 2D shows a number of lecture and discussion sections. Do I just choose a lecture to enroll in and then choose any of the discussion sections listed directly afterwards or may I choose any of the discussion sections? Am I even required to choose a discussion section?

I understand policies for this issue may vary depending on university, but I would be glad to know how you choose courses at your university.

Depends on the class. In some of my classes, we enrolled in a discussion section directly. In others, we chose the discussion section at the beginning of the quarter. In others, you could attend any discussion section you wanted. In others, discussion section was optional or not used.

You could try to email the professor to ask.

Ok thank you!

I’m a UCI student. In all of the classes I’ve taken I had to take a discussion section that corresponds to a particular lecture class (in this case you have to pick one of the lecture times then decide on one of the two discussion sections directly below the lecture class). Whether attendance is required depends on what the professor wants.
